Default Cook County Sales Tax thread

.... Under the deal, the county portion of the sales tax increases from 0.75 percent to 1.75 percent in November. As a result, someone buying $100 worth of merchandise will pay an extra dollar in sales tax.

Chicago's overall sales tax will stand at 10.25 percent, the highest of any major U.S. city. In suburban Cook, the sales tax would be a minimum of 9 percent. By comparison, the rates in New York and Los Angeles are below 8.5 percent. "This tax increase is unjustified for too many reasons to mention at 10 minutes to midnight," said Commissioner Forrest Claypool (D-Chicago) during debate.....

Can I say again what an idiot Stroger is? Can I? Oh, and he got 1000 more new jobs for his relatives too.

Gah! Make it stop.

i'm continually amazed by the stupidity of the people elected here.

so this new, higher sales tax only goes for stuff that isn't groceries, yes? 10.25 is bad, but it's still only 1% higher than what i was paying in Tennessee on everything i touched.

Perhpas Stroger needs to buy another private elevator.

I wish Tony would have won the election. Perhaps next time perika will win.

For great political commentary, go to www.russstewart.com

What happens first;
Does Stroger screw up so bad his black base stops supporting him or increases in hispanic population gets their own candidate. I am betting Stroger is done one way or another.

Will they also be increasing cook county sales tax stamp for property?

Stupidity or ingenuity...the fact that they can pull this off, hire friends and family, and we just sit down and take it and pay our tax bills when they are due

This is crazy. I don't believe Stroger convinced 9 people to vote this way...

Claypool will win if he runs again. We have to see if Peraica becomes Cook County States Attorney, I doubt he will run for Board President next election.

"Key to resolving the impasse was a deal between Stroger and Commissioner Larry Suffredin (D-Evanston), who agreed to provide the crucial ninth vote to get the tax increases approved."

County budget deal hikes taxes -- chicagotribune.com

Suffredin-"A candidate of change". Laughable. At least he lost his primary for Cook County States Attorney. He needs to be voted out also.

"The swing vote to pass the budget was set to come from Commissioner Larry Suffredin, who campaigned for state's attorney on a boast that he had "stood up to Todd Stroger's tax increases," and as of Friday night, his website still quotes him as saying "at this point, I see no need for any increase in taxes."

Does the sales tax apply to all items in Chicago? What about suburban Cook County? Some places, as you probably already know, drop the salex tax on clothing and food. In New York City, clothing under $110 or something doesn't get taxed. In New Jersey clothing and food are not taxed at all.

The extra 1% applies to all items I believe in Cook County.
