I feel the complete opposite. Metra is depressing, the L is exciting and fun.

It's been awhile since I've taken the EL, I don't know if depressing is the word, but I do find it unappealing. Homeless People, People with Poor Hygiene, Woman trying to care for multiple kids, guy making an announcement that he needs spare change, guy trying to get a record deal by rapping on the train, and people eating on the train (seriously, that is disgusting), sleeping on the train, etc. No thanks.

I grew up riding the L. Now I pay out the ass for my car. I would rather be inconvenienced by the L and the RTA than have to deal with driving on icy roads and paying tolls plus also having to take extra time to park.

Now that I have heard that they want to make all seats plastic because of the bugs on the CTA, that is creepy.

Depressing? Absolutely not. Usually it's fine, occasionally there's a crazy person or thug bothering people - but never depressing.

Depends what station I have to get on from. When I lived off of the Belmont stop for example, commuting was pure hell. Having to wait for a train to go by just to be able to squeeze into a car is not enjoyable in the slightest. I eventually started leaving early and getting coffee downtown just so that I could get on a less crowded train.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, when I used to live off of the Loyola stop I never had an issue. Yeah the commute took longer, but I was never without a seat, and I could sit there and watch all of the people attempt to cram in.

Having a car isn't necessary in my neighborhood. The random charges for a new starter or timing belt etc that you can't plan for are for more depressing than riding the CTA. Of course I only have to four stops which is great.

A-to-the-men my good sir. You NEVER EVER can truly say you don't have car payments.

I don't find it creepy at all. They have already put in the plastic seats on some of the buses. It may not be quite as comfortable as the old seats, but they are much easier to keep clean and it prevents the nasty "mystery" stains you find on some of the seats. That can be disgusting!

You must be one of those Chicagoans that moved in from Iowa or some such.
Ain't no one who grew up in Chicago (or Philly or NY) thinks the el is "exciting and fun." More like a necessary evil.
