Thanks for the compliment, though I doubt I know anything more about St. Louis than anyone else who spent most of their life there
Much of what Humboldt said is right on- the city itself (esp. its north side) has a lot of poor blacks and its south side middle class and lower income whites- it's as segregated as Chicago... which is a real shame.

Not Big Bend. I was on Delmar east of Skinker, in Chicago, but close to Clayton, north of Forrest Park. There is an Amoco station two blocks west of there (not the one on Skinker with the world's largest amoco sign). No one filling up their gas tanks offered to help me either.
Some suburbs are white and some are black. I know the area very well thank you aragx6, with my mother's family from Missouri. Clayton and University City may have some blacks, but the area of St. Louis north of Central West End is almost entirely black. Flossmor and Creve Coer are like Barrington and Arlington Heights, almost entirely white.
I should have stated that much of St. Louis is poor and black. Those numbers you quote are from 2000 census. Still, 51.2% represents a majority. Chicago is roughly 1/3 black, 1/3 white, 1/3 hispanic for comparison. And yes, St. Louis is very segregated. Just look at Central West End, an oasis surrounded by a bunch of not so great areas, excepting the Wash U medical school campus.

I've been all around the us and europe. I've yet to see a city that isn't for most part segregated.

If I'm standing two blocks away from what appears to be a skirmish between a bunch of men, I'm not going any closer (no matter the race of those involved). I don't know what's going on or who's involved (gangs, bad drug deal, etc.), so I'm not going to endanger myself by getting closer. I would call the police, give as much information as I can and stay the heck away.

What about University City (48 white /45 black) Hazelwood (80 w /16 b ), Florissant (85 w /11 b) or Maryland heights which has significant Asian Indian and Hispanic populations along with Whites and Blacks, Richmond Heights (80 w/13 b), Ferguson (52 black, 44 white) Dellwood (58 b, 39 w), Moline acres (85 b, 12 w)
Shall I go on? (Because I can) There are segregated areas of St. Louis, but plenty that aren't. The truth is what you make of it I guess.

Yes, people get mugged in Lincoln Park and Lakeview. But people get mugged a lot more in Englewood, Austin, and the like.

I never said people didn't rob and rape and kill in their own neighborhoods. I said they'd be idiots to do so. Clearly... people are idiots.
I know this stuff happens in the rougher areas. My point was that it can also travel. It's not an either/or proposition.

Aragx6 I will buy you a beer
Aragx6,
I think you make some good points on here. I agree with on University City being mixed.
Not Big Bend. I was on Delmar east of Skinker, in Chicago, but close to Clayton, north of Forrest Park.
I meant to say St. Louis, not Chicago here.
If I ever meet up with you or anyone else from this board I will buy you a beer. I enjoy our discussions, regardless of whether or not we agree on everything.
And Carolina, I agree with you that muggings, murders, etc. are more prevalent in poorer neighborhoods. In rich neighborhoods we get a false sense of security and are shocked when someone is raped or murdered in areas such as Lakeview or Lincoln Park. Clearly, more people are murdered in areas such as Englewood and Austin.
Rapes seem to be fairly prevalent in north side neighborhoods such as Lakeview. Maybe they are more reported in these areas than areas such as Englewood or Austin. I honestly don't know.
The point is people expect bad things to happen in "bad" areas but not in "nice" areas.

The Beer I will buy will not be natural light
Sorry Carolina. Probably not PBR either, though you can get it in bottles at California Clipper.
