I'm working up to walking to work, about 1.75 miles. I did it twice last week, took 35 - 40 minutes. The bus would probably be about 20 if I'm counting from when I get on and not when I get to the stop.

Not a long commute at all that's great! Sounds like a nice walk too.

Another nice commute. Must be a nice advantage to living in the city compared to the burbs where people have such a long commute, especially on a day like today which according to the news took people 3-4 hours!

I live about 1 mile from a CTA stop. In the morning the buses run very frequently so I just hop on. On nice spring/summer days, I walk and love it for the exercise. On the way home, I almost always walk, and again I use the walk for exercise. It's about a 15 minute walk, so it's not bad in terms of time. My body has adjusted and I can walk fine in any weather. The only time it becomes a pain is when there is heavy rain.

For me, 1 mile distance from the CTA is fine, but I don't think I would want to live any further than that.

Yeah I walk about a mile each way on my commute...every day my phone says "Hey, we see you've been working out!" Nope...just trying to get to my j.o.b....

I wouldn't walk much farther than that though, and I would't walk that far to get to every day errands either, like groceries or grabbing a bite to eat. If I had to go that far for everything, I may as well live in the suburbs and drive everywhere. It's fine when it's part of a routine though, and it cuts down on the time I need to spend at the gym a bit (I'm not one of those runners who plows down everyone in my path, though...a fast walking pace that raises my heart rate is enough for me).

15 minutes away would be my max if I'd have to walk to said train every day. If there's a closer bus that's going to get me there in the same amount of time as walking and taking the L though, then I'm taking the bus. This will especially be true in winter.

The over/under seems to be about a mile, or slightly less. Some might find it difficult to do that on the way to work, but after work should seem pretty easy, especially in good weather, which should include most parts of at least 3 seasons, if not part of the 4th ( walking for a mile in 20-30 -degree weather is pretty easy, IMO)..

I would say 10 minutes max, that's what I've always used as a guide when I was buying or renting.

Of the places I've lived, their distance from the L:

5 minutes
2 minutes
8 minutes
8 minutes
9 minutes
2 minutes

I normally will just walk home when it's nice out, it takes about 90 minutes and is 4.6 miles.

If anything, I do less walking in the hottest part of the summer, walking in 20 - 30 degree weather is great if there's no ice or snow on the sidewalks.
