Question about Chicago real estate.
I was looking at condos in Chicago just for fun and I couldn't believe my eyes when I came across this one! It is really nice and I believe it's in the loop, Chicago's best part (please correct me if I'm wrong). I live about 35 minutes from NYC (in NJ) and you would never find a place this gorgeous for that price anywhere in the city, yet alone midtown. Is it because of the current real estate problems in the country? I love city life (NYC and Chicago are the best cities in the US IMO ). Since NYC is so expensive, I might consider Chicago an option in the future!

Go to this site
Go to Chicago Real Estate Baird & Warner and search under properties that have sold. You can even search for units in 212 W Washington that have sold and compare, based upon bedrooms and baths and square footage. Of course every unit will have different finishes and prices may vary from floor to floor. I have found your property along with 3 others sold in 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2007 that appear to be comparable.
You should be able to go thru and see what things are selling for. $550M seems high to me based upon past sales. Good luck in your search.

Also note that it's only in the last few years that people desired living in the loop. Everything closes very early because it's most business oriented. The premier neighborhoods in Chicago are more like the Gold Coast and Lincoln Park.

Thanks for your replies. I was only interested in the property and its price. I'm not looking to buy anything right now and I won't be for a long time.

Yeah, compared to NYC, Chicago is an amazing bargain. There are several people on city-data who relocated recently for lower cost of living.

The price seems a little low for the location and amenities, but not unusually so. It could be the price is somewhat low because the assessments are outrageous, so it all works out in the end.
212 W. Washington is pretty much right downtown, but I wouldn't say that's the best part of town. That's right in the financial/business/legal district, which all but shuts down at 7pm. To be sure, you're only a short cab ride or train ride to some serious nightlife from there, but in that immediate area it's eerily quiet after dark. If this condo were in the Gold Coast it would probably be at least a couple hundred thousand more.
