Just like Tom is the site's collective grandpa -- we smile and nod along when he talks about roads that no longer exist and politicians who are long dead but at the end of the day we are just trying to protect him from wondering off and never being heard from again.

Tom doesn't need protection. He's definitely one of the wittier regulars, and can fend for himself quite nicely.

I'm very much a yuppie. I'm alright with that I contribute much to society. Especially in taxes. Lord, especially in taxes. I own (what are now) two very expensive properties in Chicago-- the city generates massive tax revenue from homes like mine. My societal class also spends way more and generates commerce.... especially commerce from small mom'n'pop shops. We bring certain chains with us-- Starbucks is the stereotype-- but we also have the purchasing power to change industry when we refuse to buy for whatever reason.
I wear a lot of Banana Republic. I donate a lot to charities. Yes, I own a lot (and I mean a lot) of Ralph Lauren, original French couture, Louboutin and Dior and Manolo... I'm a single female in her late twenties with a lot of disposable income, no children or husband, a career that's gone very far (far beyond what I was ever expecting). I'm not the best person you'll ever meet. In fact I'm pretty much the stereotypical career-driven woman who's had to claw her way past male colleagues to get where she is. I also fulfill a lot of the stereotypes about yuppies, as noted above. You may or may not like me if you knew me in person, and to be blunt I don't care. I give a lot and I demand a lot-- I got ahead in life by demanding certain qualities from myself without ever slipping up, and I damn well expect the rest from everyone else in this society. I give far more than I get back, in time and money and... yes... taxes. And apparently it's still not enough for the flunkies at the bottom rung of this society that believe they deserve something.
No one deserves anything, whether it's to live in a specific neighborhood or to achieve a certain standard of living.

Air to breathe? Gravity to hold them to the earth? Clearly there is a bare minimum somewhere of what a human being "deserves". For a socialist this includes a job and a decent place to live. Clearly you're not a socialist, though.

If you're working for me on a project, it's unlikely that you could have gotten there without being able to operate at a level of competence that doesn't require supervision.
