I can't count how many times I've been on a walk and seen a rat scurry across the sidewalk from one grassy area to another (almost always at night). But I've never met an aggressive rat. Remember: They're more afraid of you than you are of them. You'll be fine.
Ha! I don't think the rats in this town are afraid of much of anything.

A sudden move? Are you kidding me? I had one stand on its hind legs on Division near Ashland like 4 years ago and that sucker did not flinch even when I threw rocks at it.

I grew up in Chicago and do agree that the rat problem has gotten much better in the last 10-15 years. I developed a rat phobia after the garbage strike in the late 80's, which made me really hyper-vigelent of rats. I made a short move to the burbs a few years ago and was disgusted by the possum and racoon problem in places like Naperville. My advise is have a braver person throw out your trash and you can go years with out seeing one.

The nice thing about the wet spring is the raccoons are enormous. These bloated creatures can't move all that quickly and make easy targets for the coyotes. Nature's way...
