Hello Everyone,

I am planning to move to uptown in this June (4607 N Sheridan Rd). I have come across good reviews for the apartment, however I am a bit bothered about the safety of neighborhood. I will be using subway to commute daily to downtown for work and I might be working late nights some times.

Can someone please suggest if this is a safe place to move?

Hi Pkankan,
On a scale from 1 to 10 with 10 being super super safe, I would rate this area around a 6. The area does have some gang activity but not enough to be super concerning to the average resident. I would certainly be aware of your surroundings and not wander too late into the night.

The few times I have been up by Wilson late at night I have seen some suspicious activity. The Wilson stop in particular is known for being a bit more sketchy. I think the area itself is changing for the better though and I think it will gentrify in the coming years.

Best of luck on your move to Chicago and congratulations!

On two separate occasions (~6 months apart) I witnessed gunfire at that intersection. I would not want to live there.

The Wilson Red Line stop was one of the worst in the CTA system. The station house was a decayed, blighted, rat-infested dump that attracted tons of sketchy characters. But it's undergoing a renovation, which should make for much improved conditions in the immediate area. I recently read that a sustainable grocery store is looking to rent space in the new station. Having said that, there are definitely crime issues in Uptown and using one's discretion goes a long way.

Not especially dangerous (though shootings aren't exactly uncommon) but I wouldn't want to live there either. More annoyances than anything else.

Sheridan and Wilson is relatively safe. The Wilson station area is sketchy, especially west of Broadway.

I just moved to Sheridan/Lawrence and walk through the area regularly. There is some activity, but none especially concerning to the average resident as another poster commented. It would not deter me from moving there.

There are two homeless shelters not far from there if that is concerning to you.

I always found that area more annoying and depressing than outright dangerous.

I did enjoy trying out that new Sonic in the area shortly before I moved away.

Slowly but surely, that area is on an upswing, IMO... but it'll take awhile to be fully there.
