Just curious to see what people thought about Chicago's new income tax rate, relative to other states they have thought about moving to. Are we making too big a fuss over this 1.2pp increase?

It's not just the income tax. We also have extremely high property and sales tax and silly taxes like taxes on sugary drinks and bottled water. Plus, toll roads and red light cameras (*just another form of revenue) everywhere. The lower income tax was what I used to justify paying higher property/sales taxes, but now the one thing that Illinois had going for it is gone. Indiana is where most will move to if they need to stay in the region.

Why would you post a map/data from 2008?

The most current data has Illinois as #1 or #2 for highest property tax in the nation.

You're confusing Chicago--no city income tax(yet)--to Illinois with a state income tax. Like flam says it's not just the income tax people have to deal with. The state and Chicago taxes groceries, plus the city has an additional tax on sweetened beverages like Philthy. Shame because Chitown was a place I was considering moving to despite its problems. Salaries for working class folks aren't bad compared to the Philthy area and rent isn't too crazy outside of the typical areas but these nonsensical taxes tho.

Yes, the income tax here is about average. But when you factor in the 10.25% sales tax in Chicago and the high property tax, our overall tax burden is very high.

Texas has some of the highest property tax rates in the country, but they don't have income tax, and other taxes are rather low.
