...which is still nature, even though it is mostly flat, which is exactly what I said. No more. No less.

sure it is. it is also paltry given the immense size of the state and our total population.

Okay, but that's an entirely different point, and the amount of nature present or absent is not a function of, nor commensurate with, population.

but it does matter if a heavily populated and urbanized/industrialized, nature starved state is all crowding the same small number of state parks and natural recreation areas. go to starved rock on a August weekend and tell me if it really feels like you've escaped into nature or not...

the simple face remains Illinois is by far one of the worst states in the US when it comes to access to wild land, regardless of its shape or form.

Baxter's Hollow / Devil's Lake area in Wisconsin is about 3 1/2 hours away. This is what Baxter's Hollow looks like from satellite in early autumn:

Yeah, Wisconsin has true wilderness.
Illinois doesn't. It's all farm.

Wisconsin is a state of farms too. All know how the Dells rolls and go a bit north like Stevens Point region ..... its flat as a pancake again and farms. Have relatives both places. Illinois rolls by Galana and has some forested areas too of course with state parks. Just overall..... yes Illinois is flatter and is more prairie but Wisconsin isn't by far more forest. Its the Dairy state you know ..... that means farms.

But nevertheless. Chicagoland's playground of choice.

I think you're being a bit cruel on Illinois (maybe a always down on Chicago too) but have you seen Iowa.....
