I'm going to be coming to Chicago for a short visit and I've been watching videos of the city on YouTube and I've noticed something about the taxis, they come in different colors instead of one standard uniform color like in New York and London. In the videos I saw there were yellow, red, white, orange, and blue and white cabs, why are chicago taxis like this. Just something I'm wondering about.

Because Uber does not tell you how to paint your car.

In New York there us two colors and each color Is for area they can go. Not sure how many companies in New York.

In Chicago maybe there are more companies because cheaper madalians.

I remember twenty years ago it was mostly yellow and checker cabs the checker cabs were green , black , and like a cream color.

Chicago does not have same rule as new York so if you own a medallion you can paint cab whatever color and name it whatever you want.

I realize you didn't ask, but in Boston, we have five or six cab companies, all different logos. Same meter in each.

No yellow cabs anymore, as all have a white background with accompany logo and stripes.

So Chicago is not as unusual as you may think.

London black cabs are all black, but mini cabs can be different colors.

The sad thing is cabs won't be around to much longer in Chicago thanks to Uber and Lyft . Uber is convienent but I think you should have a chauffer licence...
I read only thirty percent of cabs are left in Chicago so really a cab is Uber and lift any color any car type no training needed.

In NYC and some other cities, the city taxi licensing agency requires a uniform paint scheme. (One was introduced in DC a few years ago.) Not so in Chicago.

It might have something to do with how common street hailing is in various cities.

Fun fact: yellow cabs were invented in Chicago by John Hertz, who later got into car rentals. Yellow Cab Co. (of Chicago)
