Yuppie fairyland (to borrow Drover's eloquent term) or urban hell? I've driven past it in day time and it looks more to be the former but there were some shady looking characters loitering around a nearby pizza joint (or heck they could have been UIC undergrads dressed in their trendiest which I may have mistaken for "thug" threads).

This is mostly Little Italy. It's a mix of Yuppie Fairyland, Student-Land (UIC right down the street) and a small dash of Urban Hell. A lot of public and indigent housing was displaced to make Little Italy and University Village what it is today. It is also the first area to receive a good chunk of "mixed income" developments as a replacement for the projects. While it is by and large a decent place, there will always be a dash of low-income and just flat-out low-class people. The little s*#tbag being held in the Crane Tech murder lived two blocks from Taylor & Racine.

Whatever happened to the Sundance Theatre that was supposed to be built on the former Fannie May site? I believe it is at Jackson and Racine (1100-1200W Jackson).
And, I would buy in that area if I were looking to buy a condo in a trendy area, though I would be watchful as there are still some elements left over from public housing of years gone by. Regarding that s#%*bag from Northern, I don't think we will ever understand what motivates some creep to go out and do something like that. He certainly had more advantages than many of the poor underclass myself and others are so fond of bashing on forums such as this. |

Drover,
You are correct. I didn't read your post closely enough. I would say the person involved in northern illinois shootings certainly had more benefits than the crane tech murderer. Regardless of backgrounds, there is no excuse for these people did. |

thanks Drover. I asked the developer about the shady elements and she said there are still some projects around there but that most were empty and all were scheduled to be torn down by the end of this year. Do you know where I would go to confirm something like this? Is there a city website that has this type of information on it that you are aware of?

In a nutshell, the ABLA projects are for the most part gone, and the most problematic parts of them (Taylor/Racine and the high rises at Ashland/Roosevelt) were torn down first. The remaining are scheduled to be demolished over the course of the next ten years. The projects just south west of Roosevelt at Racine, however, are not scheduled to be demolished ever. They are where most of the shady people you are referring to live. Personally, I don't have a problem them, or the Barbara Jean Wright Courts on Morgan (subsidized, but not CHA), but if you are expecting the area to be totally section 8 free in the near future, you will likely be disappointed. |
