What library was this at Washington? Who published the book? What group did the research on this project?

In summary: Whats your problem with that definition and where do you see egregious problems with that map?...
Ummm for one what in the world is United Center Park?
Another: Lincoln Park stretches south to Division west of Old Town?

I don't have time right now to point out the dozens of other problems with the map right now...

But these neighborhoods don't have any rigorously defined boundaries. There is NO definitive map of neighborhoods, their boundaries are mutable and defined by the self-identity of their residents. There could understandably be residents west of Old Town and south of North who consider themselves residents of Lincoln Park, and the designation of a United Center Park is not unheard of, though this is indeed probably due to realtor branding. The goal here is to provide a useful map of neighborhoods, and this is a useful map. When I refer to egregious problems, I'm talking about realtors calling Uptown "Lakeview" or "Ravenswood," which happens. You are not pointing out egregious problems, merely squabbling over the details, butting your imprecise definition against anothers imprecise definition when no standard exists, and missing the forest for the trees, as it were.

But I could be wrong. If you indeed have already taken the time to find "dozens" of major problems with this map, I invite you to post them. It will only take a minute more, and I really think they could be useful to our curious initial poster when they move to the North Side. They need to know whats really up in this city.

I believe it was the census data book the government put out for the Chicago area following the 1980 census. I know I've seen them for every census from 1990 back. For some reason I can't find one for 2000. This was at the library on Paulina & Melrose, the name of which escapes me. I know Sulzer, and Washington have them, too.

Well for one thing the map Thiqued refers to shows Austin south of the Eisenhower as being Lawndale which is ridiculous of course. It misses The Island too.

I always wince when I see Taylor St. called "Little Italy".

The West Side is west and north of the river and it's north boundry is either North Avenue or Fullerton, depending on my mood.

Inaccurate, sure. But I wouldn't call it "ridiculous, of course." Look at it this way: were the community areas delineated after the interstate highway system was built, there would be reason to exclude that southern strip from Austin. As it now stands, the Eisenhower makes it difficult to access the residential strip south of the freeway from the rest of Austin. It has better access to the Lawndale neighborhood. The Island would be an exception, but this is all nitpicky and rather obscure.

Anyway, I could go on for hours with this, competing to see who has spent more time memorizing maps, but I don't really see the point, so I'm going to drop it. Hope this map doesn't seriously mislead anyone with its dozens of obvious errors.

Actually, I now remember the book is called "The Local Community Fact Book: The Chicago Metropolitan Area". As I said it was published a few years after every census up until 1990. Why they didn't publish one for the 2000 census, I don't know.
