It's just so weird how we used to have WNUA and then not only was it replaced by one country station, two others followed to be added to our local frequencies.

It just shows the changing demographics of Chicago and how much less like the city I grew up in we are getting. We don't even have a station for House and we invented that. I just don't feel those things fit in Chicago. I feel like an out of towner sometimes and I am a local.

I actually like country, but I think it's because I never grew up hearing it on the radio so it's still kind of novel to me. My friends from the rural Midwest and South are a lot less keen on hearing it.

Real country music is actually an important part of the history of Chicago, brought by poor White people ("hillbillies" if you prefer) from the South during the Great Migration just as Black people from the South brought jazz and blues. You can still find traces of this by seeing the Hoyle Brothers every Friday evening at Empty Bottle, or some of the bands that play at Honky Tonk, among other places.

The music that is played on mainstream corporate "county" radio stations, on the other hand, is not country music at all. It's basically just really bland pop music (with the occasional affected vocal twang) to appeal to the MAGA crowd. Or, as Steve Earle brilliantly said, "It's hip-hop for people who hate Black people."

These are two totally different types of music.

How much national negative attention the city gets for violent crime. Just when the noise has died down, there ends up being a national headline related to violent crime.

The shutdown of the Dan Ryan brought national attention, then the fatal police shooting/protest, the man with 43 children fatally beaten, etc. It seems like we are guaranteed to make national headlines related to violent crime every few weeks, and it is pretty irritating.

WHY would "innocuous things" irritate anyone?

The people out in the country listen to it, that makes it country music. Really.

I think I've heard it called "Urban Country"... which sounds like a contradiction in terms if I've ever heard one.

I'm not a big fan of country music... but I'd take country over rap any day.

I don't "hate" them, but I'd still rather not listen to either of them...
