I have lived in austin, texas my entire life. I am itching to get out and want to move.
We're considering chicago because of its public transportation and big city feel, but we dont know much else about it.
I need public transportation as I do not drive.
I need a dog friendly city because I have two great danes and my boyfriend has a cocker spaniel. (reasonable priced rental houses that have fenced yards, dog parks etc)
I need reasonbly priced school (community college, possible university)
I need an affordable cost of living (Right now I pay 1050 for a 900 sq ft house in central austin. I pay so much because I can't live in cheaper areas due to me not driving and out bus system is CRAP unless you live central)
Ideally, I'd like to be able to catch a train, subway, what have you and be able to easily get to work/school with out having to sit on a bus for an hour and a half each way. I also would like to keep my housing under 700$ a month. I'd be open to paying more if its a 2 or 3 bedroom. The house has to have a yard and be atleast 1000 sq ft. I DON'T want to be in the ghetto or any shady parts of town.
What is the cost of living compared to austin (city, not suburb) texas? How well can a student who makes 25,000 - 30,000 a year live? Compared to austin, texas what are the biggest differences?

Read This First- ?'s About Neighborhoods Or Moving To Chicago (or FOOD!)? Read This Before Asking Your Questions!
That is a good place to start. There is info on dog friendly places, public transit, etc.
My only question is, have you been to Chicago? $700 for a safe place with a yard? And a house? Not gonna happen!! Most places aren't houses. They are apartments that often don't have yards. You can possibly find a place for $700, but will more than likely be a 1 bedroom (or studio) with no yard (or a small, shared yard).
Another concern is that where you plan on working/going to school will make a BIG difference in your commute and where you want to live in the city. For instance, UIC and Loyola are on totally opposite sides of the city and you probably wouldn't live in the same place if you want a short commute.
The burbs may be the best bet for you, but the you'll have a longer commute, depending on where you work, etc.....
Beyond this, I know nothing about Austin, but here are the results of the comparison for cost of living:
Salary in Austin TX:
$30,000
Comparable salary in Chicago IL:
$35,408.66
If you move from Austin TX to Chicago IL...
Groceries will cost: 19.264% more
Housing will cost: 50.143% more
Utilities will cost: 20.815% more
Transportation will cost: 11.182% more
Healthcare will cost: 10.125% more
You'll see that housing is going to be the biggest shock!

Just don't move to the Austin neighborhood and you will be fine.
30m isn't much to live on but I got by on 40m when I first moved here 6 years ago. Get a roommate if you can and you will get a much nicer place in a better area. With you working and in school you likely won't have time to hardly know you even have a roommate.

The scenario you have outlined pretty much limits you to the South or West Sides, probably Bridgeport, Pilsen, or possibly Taylor Street, and maybe even McKinley Park. The good news is that those neighborhoods are not upscale (but decent), and would put you close to, possibly within walking distance of, the University of Illinois at Chicago. The bad news is that two great danes and a cocker spaniel is one heck of a lot of dog mass, meaning you'll need to be very persuasive with prospective landlords.
Overall, you'll find Chicago to be a VERY dog-friendly place.
I've never lived in Austin, so I couldn't possibly give you a comparison. All I can say that there are a fair number of college students in Chicago (conservatively 70,000 between UIC, De Paul, U of C, Columbia, Loyola, Roosevelt, Art Institute, Robert Morris, City Colleges, North Park, etc. etc.), and they seem to be doing just fine.
Best of luck.

I moved from Austin to Chicago in August 2007 and absolutely love it here. The weather takes A LOT of getting used to though. I liked Austin, but wanted to live in a bigger city..Chicago has everything you could possibly want in a big city, without the NYC prices.
I live in Wicker Park and it reminds me a lot of Guadalupe Street in Austin (close to campus, aka "the drag"). I pay $950/month + utilities for a 600 sq. ft. 1-bedroom apartment.

Generally it's pretty easy to find a landlord who'll let you have two little dogs or one big dog. You'd have to find a saint to let you have 2 giant dogs and a small/medium dog on what will, on your budget, certainly be a 1 or maybe 2 bedroom apartment.
Check out Craigslist to get a better idea of what you can afford. I think you could get an apartment in Ukrainian Village for that price. It's not close to the el, but there's bus service. Here's one that might work: 1Bed+ den/Great Rehabbed Garden Unit (broken link)

I moved to Chicago from Austin last year. I think you are making a good move. There are FAR more things to do in Chicago. Not just the museums, but the beaches, ball parks, festivals, downtown loop, live theater, and so on. Also, Chicago's festivals are free, like taste, blues, etc., unlike ACL or SXSW. Chicago is far more dense, more going on, more people everywhere, L trains whizzing by, a huge park system that goes on for miles, with thousands of bikers and joggers, etc. That being said, I need to address the affordability issue. Chicago is quite a bit more expensive than Austin per housing, rental and purchase. You won't find a house to rent in the decent city areas for $1000/month. You would be hard pressed to rent a house for $1000 or under even in the bad areas. You want to be near public transportation with a short commute. That would mean you'd want to rent an apartment that allows dogs near DT and the trans. grid. Lakeview would be a good place(some people call it Wrigleyville, especially in movies, but its really called Lakeview). You would just make the one-bedroom range at 1000/month there. If you go to the outskirts, such as rogers park/wicker park, you might find a two-bed for 1000/month. Also, they do have a lot of two-flats, where people rent out the top unit, which is more of a home feeling, with backyards you can use for the dogs. If you do end up in an apartment in the city, there are plenty of parks and dog runs you can take them to. I would say Chicago is as big on dogs as Austin, if not more so. I do think you might find Chicago out of your budget, per Chicago proper. There is an area called Northwest Indiana, not far from Chicago, right on the South Shore line trans grid going DT, that has homes you might find to rent for 1000-1200/month in pretty decent areas, with backyards. Try
nwi.com - The Northwest Indiana and Illinois Times Newspaper and see if you can find anything on there, if your search in Chicago doesn't work out. Also, Chicago's immediate south suburbs, where I live, may have rental housing for 1000/month. I'm white, and feel very comfortable there. Its a mixed area, like some of the better areas east of I-35, so include that in your search. Try
The SouthtownStar for rentals in that area.
Chicago Reader Online Features is a good place to find rental housing in the parts of the city you would be interested in, close to DT and the trans grid. Good luck. You are making the right move. I would be bored out of my mind living for years in Austin. Chicago is infinitely more interesting and dynamic. Better everything....food, music, nightlife even. Marcia Ball herself told me at Antone's that she thinks Chicago has a better music scene than Austin, and I presume she should know!

Hard to Read
What is up with these people who posts 1000 word paragraphs that give me a headache to read? Regardless of content or opinion, please indent and use paragraphs for the sake of the eyes and brains of those reading your posts.

Actually, I'm just too tired just from typing the material to intent or use paragraphs. Hey, at least I'm not capitalizing everything! Let's just say that I probably would never get an A in proper english writing on here, but at the same time, say, that if you are looking for erudite expositions of grammar and punctuation on the net, posts and such are definitely the wrong place. I write so much on here that if I took the extra time to parenthesize and intent and such, I'd spend so much time on here writing that it wouldn't be worth the time. I do hope it didn't spoil your day, and I'm sure that, given enough time, you probably will get over it. If you live in Humbolt Park, I'm sure you see far more upsetting things than unintended paragraphs, like random gunfire and such. Next time you pass a few gangbangers on the street, and your heart races in fear, think, in retrospect, how meaningless unintented paragraphs are as a point of perterbation!
