Lexington almost everyday for a year. Maybe you're thinking of the subways in the movies, but I never felt unsafe once. Which contrasts heavily with the shock at the degenerates that ride the CTA.

You guys, he is so right! I took the brown line home from Ribfest tonight and normally I wouldn't even go near the Irving Pk stop with all the street toughs that hang out in that neighborhood but I didn't listen to my inner voice and got on anyway. You wouldn't believe what I saw! Not one, but two young no-good-nicks with backwards hats! One even had a ring...through his EYEBROW!
I'm lucky I got out with my life. Nothing but limousines for me here on out.

Try the Brooklyn trains. Different story once you get away from Park Slope and Williamsburg. I rode the 6 train for a summer, and the Uptown crowd on that one ain't so savory either, but it's entertaining to see them mix with the Park Avenue crowd. The 6 reminds me of the Red Line in some ways, because it connects the poorest part of the city with the richest part.

If you are coming from Boston (or NY or DC), then you are in for a bit of a shock. Boston's T is mostly college students and professionals - Chicago's mass transportation attracts a much different crowd.
Originally my wife was going to take the red then blue line from Gold Coast to UIC. After 1 day we nixed that idea and now she takes the car. No way I would let her on those lines at night.

Hahaha, have you ever taken the trains in NYC or Boston? I've taken every one of the Chicago lines, been on them at all 24 hours of the day and haven't had a car in years. I've never run into a single problem. Obviously they happen, but grow up, it's not that remote of an issue if you have a head about yourself.

Im pretty impressed youve been on all the lines 24 hours a day, especially when you consider most dont run 24 hours.
That said, I do agree with what you are saying.

I think I've only ran into one problem in 10 years taking the red/blue lines as my only mode of transportation within the city. Yeah, the homeless people smell like pee.... big whoop, breathe through your mouth. Its way cheaper to get to O'Hare that way then in a cab which is just as stinky and even more dangerous the way those nut jobs drive.
