Nuts.

Plan B -- stay here and enjoy today's beautiful Chicago weather (the kind we "live for"....as Floridians live for February/March/April.....) and discard all earthquake books and avoid "It Could Happen To You" Weater Channel programming.

Default chicago winters = not that bad

I think it's about time everyone stopped with the whining about Chicago winters. It seems in just about every other thread, somebody mentions how bad the winter is here. Sure if you're used to living in Florida, Chicago could be quite a shock. But really, is it that bad? Have you been to Minneapolis? Winnipeg? Fairbanks? Enough. I don't know where this reputation Chicago gets as having such rough winters comes from. We don't get the massive lake effect snow some parts of the country get, and we don't get the extreme cold further north in Canada. It's just winter, deal with it. I fear the threads that will pop up when the first cold snap hits. People will stop just short of proclaiming this the coldest place on earth.

I agree that the winters in chicago aren't bad compared to more northern climes, but that doesn't mean they don't completely suck. For people who don't like enervating gray skies and frigid cold, it is a big deal. Chicago's winters are worse than anything in the major cities on the west coast and the east coast (save maybe boston), let alone anything south, so to insinuate that winters in Chicago are "normal" is a little daft.

Where did I say "normal" in my post?

Yeah. I used to say that while growing up in Northern Ohio. Then a funny thing happened. I grew up, moved away and started to realize that while the Mid-West winters were not all that bad, they weren't all that good, either.

It's been 30 years now and not a winter goes by that I don't thank my lucky stars that I no longer have to:

1) Have a "storm door"
2) Wear boots 4 months a year
3) Walk around dodging 12" piles of dirty slush
4) Waiting for a car to "warm up"
5) Scraping windows
6) Throwing Salt
7) Shoveling Snow
8) Wearing heavy clothing
9) Enduring the gray skies commonly referred to in Northern Ohio as the "Moscow Effect"....at least they haven't lost their levity!
10) Not seeing my shadow for weeks on end
11) Watching my car dissolve from rust after 4 or 5 years of use
12) Knocking 40lb stlalagtites off the corners of my wheelwells
13) Reading used car ads with great phrases like "some rust" or "little rust"
14) Prying doors open from drifts
15) Feeling my face crack

Yeah, if you toss out these and another 30 descriptions or so, I guess it's not "that bad". Go South young man, go South. You will live a longer, happier life. Besides, the women are pretty down South. Friendly too. They tend to lack that "Industrial Look". Just my jaded humble opinion....I could be wrong......NOT.

Well you said chicago's winters weren't rough and that "it's just winter." So either you're saying chicago's winters are normal or that they're better than a select few other cities in the USA. If it's first case, you're daft, if it's the second, the thread is pointless.

Chicago winters do suck. I've been in winters that are just as cold, yet not as dreary and boring.

Caleb, you've hit it on the head. As much as things annoy me down south, all I have to think about is winter and I know that I will never move.

If I ever had the resources, I definately could do the "snowbird" thing....

Agree....aside from SF/LA, weather in both winter and summer is rather far from perfect in any of world's major cities....

But if one lives/works in a climate-controlled setting and drives a climate-controlled car between garages at both home and office, not clear the weather differences between Chicago and NYC/Dallas, etc are particularly material...no doubt, mass transit commutes make any cold/hot/humid weather more arduous than a car-based commute/lifestyle...

BTW, NYC/Bos/Phila, etc have a milder winter than Chicago, but they struggle w/clearing roads when it does snow....Chicago is much better able to handle winter weather, both on roads and at airports....

I'm seeing a pretty strong patterns in your problems w/winter - try it without a car or a driveway, it's much easier.

I think it is all relative, I grew up in Boston and Chicago winters don't bother me at all.

Winter in general has never bothered me at all. You dress for the weather, take advantage of the beautiful nights when it's 25 degrees with new fallen snow, and when it's 5 degrees and blizzard conditions out just put "The Immigrant Song" on your iPod and stomp right through the storm.

Things that do bother me are very hot and humid days and a life without real seasons - Chicago winters are just another season to enjoy for me. I understand it's different for different people, but winter being hard to deal with in anyway it an alien way of thinking for me.
