BTW, that's just for RTA (CTA/Pace). If you ride Metra it's a separate cost.

The monthly is not that good deal. Most people spend less with a fare card. Several employers participate in the " IRS code section 132(f)" program that allows you to buy those with pre-tax income, saving more.

It really depends how much you use it if it's a good deal or not. If you commute everyday plus ride on weekends then it's a great deal.

I have my company put $75 on my Chicago-Card, and then I see if a monthly pass or just pay-per-use is going to be cheaper.

Right now, I take transit every day (even on weekends, some nights), and it's around $65 per month for me. I just stick with the pay-per-use. It also helps that a pass is $75, but if you charge up $75 in cash on your account pay-per-use, you actually get $82 in fares, cause they give you $1 for every $10 you put on at once.

So, assuming you spend 2 bucks going to work and 2 bucks coming back, that's 4 bucks a day. Work 5 days a week? 20 bucks a week. Assuming 4 weeks a month, that's 80 a month. Not counting any holidays, there were 22 weekdays in April. Assuming you worked every weekday, that's 88 bucks. That's not including any side trips.

I pay per ride, myself. I only work downtown a few days a week. When I worked downtown, I always got the monthly. Since I got it with pretax dollars through work, it generally only cost me between 60 and 65 bucks. When I worked downtown AND didn't have a car, I probably rode the train or bus 50-60 times a month. The pass was a no-brainer.

It all depends on your level of use.

Or you can always be a full-time college student like me and get a pass that lasts all semester for $87.
