ashland and montrose
I am thinking about renting an apartment on Ashland and Montrose...what exactly is this neighborhood? It looks like it's right on the lines of Ravenswood, Uptown...? I just want to see if anyone has any advice/pros/cons about this area for a single female. Thanks!

It is in Uptown. Due to peoples dispute of what are Ravenswood encompasses, I would not say it is in Ravenswood. It is ok over there, but dont go too far east from there (like east of Clark between Lawrence and Montrose-much of that are is still pretty shady) too often. Same rules apply there as everywhere else. Common sense.

Technically "Ravenswood Manor is way west of there, between Lawrence & Montrose, Scaremento & the river, everybody knows who's the most famous (and stupidiest and most hated) resident of the THAT neighborhood...
The "semi-official" name of the area you are considering is "Ravenswood Gardens"...
Anyhow thanks to people like the blow-dried-one who've over-improved the holyheck out of the homes over there (albeit without the sweet deals he got...) that is one of the most 'appreciation enhanced' markets for sfd in Chicago, with average sales price right over that $1M mark. Safety is not really a concern. You-know-who and his escort of State Police used to be a routine sight jogging along the tracks. I think lately the cops have asked their boss to stay inside because the rotten tomato stains from the splatter are hard to Shout out of their uniforms...

Safety should be taken a bit more heavily though than if you were to be lets say 4-6 blocks west from there.

Yep. Having that cruiser and scary Suburban parked with troopers in front 24x7 sorta discourages most crime
The area still is closer to "real uptown" and you aren't going your house or car unlocked...

Oh come on! Uptown isn't THAT bad. You talk about it like it's Englewood or something. You could live right in the heart of Uptown and not have that many problems. Many people do. Montrose and Ashland is perfectly alright, as is the area several blocks to the east. There are scattered problem buildings between Ashland and Broadway, and then many more problem buildings east of Broadway. But you'd probably have more problems with crime in Lakeview or Lincoln Park than you would in the part of Uptown near Montrose and Ashland! In fact, I'd be more worried about the high school a few blocks south at Ashland and Irving Park (i.e. Lakeview High School). It will cause far more problems for you at that location than any Uptown spillover.

I beg to differ. Go up Sheridan and look around.
I was specifically talking about Wilson and Broadway area around Truman.I never said Montrose and Ashland was bad. I just said it gets shady as you go east and it is a fact.

Both Sheridan and Broadway are a pretty good hike from Ashland. It's night and day.
I live in Uptown, and am more than a little familiar with the neighborhood.

Again, did you read what I wrote from the start in this thread or are you just defending Uptown as a whole?
Look, I live in Lake View and I can admit and point out the areas that are not as Kosher as the others in Lake View.
Trying to say that the area around Wilson and Broadway is not crap is ridiculous.

Lake View H.S. is technically in Uptown.
It was built of course when the neighborhood of Uptown did not exist yet.
