ChicagoPete is on a distinguished road
A little info on Chicago and the areas around the city that are along the lines of what you described.....If you're looking in the "city" of Chi, look north towards the Portage Park area, Jefferson Park, Gladstone Park, etc. I have lived in Lincoln Park (popular area closer to lake michigan) and the others mentioned as for a comparison. The ones mentioned are not as congested and are Sngle fmly homes. Safer than any other areas of the city. Also, try near Higgins and Harlem......very convenient, next to everything, safe. good schools.......can hop on 90 and be in downtown Chi in 20 minutes easy!

As far as the burbs......north is good but the western suburbs also have some of the best academic/athletic programs in the state. I live in Naperville which has been ranked no. 2 best place to live by money magazine and offers anything you can imagine. I travel to LA and Orange County quite a bit and Naperville would be the closest thing to a Newport Beach type of area as far as safe, clean and money.

Good luck.
