I found the website for the Greenline Condos, and the only units they show are this modern building in the 6600 block of South Ingleside. The website doesn't really say much, which leads me to think they just ran out of money for the moment.

Now that I think about it, the area around the 63rd/Cottage Grove Green Line stop could easily be so much better than it is. There are already a number of vibrant businesses on that corner. It's just all of the thugs running around there that cause trouble. There was a shooting there a few months ago on a Saturday at 3 pm. As long as things like that are going on, that area is going to have a tough time.

The Chicago citydata forums might as well be replaced with a map of Chicago with rich areas highlighted in one color, middle class areas in another color and poor in another. Much more concise than reading posts of the same crap over and over.

I posted this in another forum just now, but as it's super-relevant to gentrification, I can't recommend it enough:

Amazon.com: Street Signs Chicago: Neighborhood and Other Illusions of Big-City…

Written in the late 70s, it "profiles" Pilsen and some other "on the verge of gentrifying" neighborhoods, it's truly the best book about Chicago as Chicagoans experienced it then (if not now) ever.

There are some gorgeous old houses in Bronzeville like this one that just need some TLC to turn into amazing homes in the city. It's all about location, but Bronzeville has some great geographic factors in its favor. The lake, US Cellular field, and IIT are right there. There are numerous transportation links: Green line, Red line, new Metra station coming, 90/94 easy access, and LSD easy access. The loop is not far away. From a safety stand point the Chicago Police HQ is right down the street on 35th and Michigan. People in the area are generally very nice and welcoming. I am biased because I am fixing up my own house in Bronzeville I bought a year ago, but so far it's been a great decision and way better than paying way more for a cramped condo with assessment fees or moving to the suburbs in my opinion.

The thing about Bronzeville is that it's been coming back for years. A lot of people were holding on so they could cash in on the Olympics. They all bailed once that went bust. I have friends who live on 48 Place E of King Drive. They said it got noticeably crappier in the last few months. They concluded that the last couple years of improvement was just people making nice and holding their breath as they Backed the Bid.

Just because there is a police station nearby doesn't mean trouble won't be around. There is a police station less than a block away from 32nd and Morgan in Bridgeport, but that area is still super seedy.
