By south of Division do you mean around Augusta or south of Division all the way to Chicago? Because honestly, it's not the most beautiful place, but it's not really dangerous beyond the normal use common sense level.

I beg to differ. The farther south you go the worse it gets on Ashland.
Common sense level for someone that has lived in Chicago (or any city above 1 million persons really) for a few years and knows where they are going. But it still is sketchy down there. I have lived there and I would again. But I am a big strong guy that was born in the city and grew up in the city. For a newcomer it takes alot more unless they are used to urban living. Which that area is much more "urban" now than Wicker Park/Bucktown is now.

I never had any problems during the day, though walking around at night I almost always got honked at or gestured to. my bike was stolen the only night I left it out. I had a jeep and all the change and stuff was stolen out of it.

Generally though, okay. Only an issue in the dark, and alone. I felt fine for the most part if I was walking with a friend or a guy.

I've driven by a couple of times latley and it seems to be better, but not wildly different.

I would probably not live right there again because of the transit issues. If you are closer to an el stop there its a better idea. I also hated riding my bike around there...but then I went to UIC and it was just a major major hassle.
Another great assessment.

Thats going to be one hell of a drive everyday. I hope you start work after 10 am or before 8 am...

Its impossible to be 4 blocks from Damen and 3 blocks from Ashland at the same time!

I don't actually think we have that much disagreement. I totally agree that closer to Damen is nicer and Noble Square is more urban than Wicker Park. And yes it might come as a shock to someone not used to an urban area, I just didn't want to give the OP the impression the Noble Square is some kind of urban hell, which it most certainly isn't. I also do live in the neighborhood and I'm not a big guy (or a guy at all) and I feel okay going out at night by myself. I wouldn't do it at any hour if I didn't have to, but it's (obviously) not a place I would fear going to after dark.

I dont think the area near Ashland is a place women should be out late at night without a male escort. We can differ on that. I think the area is a few years away from being safe enough to do that without taking a huge risk. I have many horror stories that involve women I know that live(d) in that area.

No, it it not an "urban hell", but it pretty close to areas that are. Also it has a few really bad pockets. Not an area to walk around late at night drunk or not, if a female or male.

Sorry I meant to say that it is 3 streets from Damen and 5 from Ashland.

A while ago I asked on here where the best place to live if I was working in DG and people debated but felt Ukrainian Village would be best because of my age. I tried the drive last Friday morning at 7 am and was at work by 7:40 ... I figured I would leave for work at 7 am, go to the gym in DG until 6, so I would head back from DG at 6 pm. Does this sound more realistic now? I am planning on a 40 minutes or so commute each way.

I mean that I am around Augusta, actually a bit north of it still. I drove down Chicago and could tell I should not live too close to it.

Some gang activity in the area, but it's mostly yuppieville.
