Someone moving to Chicago from Detroit knows what to expect.

Same thing here. When I put my transfer in my friends and family wouldn't even discuss it. Everythime I mentioned the word Chicago in front of my Mom she would start crying. Well when the transfer went through, they had to accept it, and suddenly before too long, people were talking about who was gonna get to come up and sleep on the couch and when. Dad and stepmom are even wanting to come up and visit and play golf (good luck to em, I don't play). Which reminds me of something else I need to ask on the forum, thanks.

I'm scared to leave my happy, safe, albeit lonely suburban life.

I know I have always enjoyed chicago when I've been there. I guess I'm just looking for some encouragement that I'll be able to meet people and my dog will be able to enoy his new life too when I get there.

So, toss me some Chamber of Commerce style advice.

You better like incredibly bitterly cold winters, so cold the wind hits you and it feels like paper cuts on your face. The summers are so hot (heat index 125 degrees) you wish for summer.
Um, the weather is actually WORSE in Detroit. The temperatures are similar, but they get a LOT more snow in Michigan because of the way it's situated within the Great Lakes.

I can attest to this. I'll be moving from Mid-Michigan to Chicago in a few months, and one of the things I'm excited about is the WARMER weather. It's about 4-5 degrees warmer year-round in Chicago than from where I'm from. And when it snows, you don't really have to worry about it because you don't need a car in the city. I always laugh when I see people complain about how horrid the weather is in Chicago. I guess it all depends on what you're used to.

Yeah, that's for sure. I moved here from Cleveland, and the biggest surprise for me was how little snow Chicago gets in comparison. We tend not to get lake effect snow very often... most of it goes in the other direction due to wind patterns... and that makes a big difference.
