Well, you'll probably need the subway (red/blue), and the el (g/p/o/b), and the buses, and perhaps even metra. But it's all doable. I've been there several times, and I'm about to make the move myself in a couple weeks, with no car. I'll be freeee from high gas prices!

Sure you can just use the buses and trains( Metra/Pace/CTA). No car needed. Not to mention it's to darn expensive to park your car.

Train coverage is nowhere near as comprehensive as NYC... however, buses, trains, or a combination of both will get you to just about any corner of the city... eventually. Plenty of people get by here without a car.

You can get by without a car in some of the more dense neighborhoods, but a lot of people in Chicago still own them. My wife and I have one small fuel-efficient car between the two of us, and we don't use it to get to work.

It kind of depends on what corner of the city you are situated in. It's good to have a grocery store within walking distance if you don't own a car, but you can always take a cab or use a car-sharing service like zip-car or I-go for your large shopping trips. It's far cheaper to take cabs when you need them than it is to own a car.

Agreed with above. I've not had a car for several years and I've been fine, but the public transportation isn't as good as nyc and there are times where I wish I had one (but not enough to go out and buy one). I get by with the a car sharing service, taxis, my scooter (when the weather is nice), and the 'el' just fine.
