is union station area safe?
I am a female that will travel to Chicago by train but my hotel is by the airport. Is the area around Union station safe to walk over to the el train? I will then spend four days doing some research at the library and will need to travel back and forth. Any suggestions? Thanks, Rhonda

In my opinion, it is very safe during the daytime and early evening. Tons of office workers all over the area. Also some residential buildings nearby. Just use good common sense.
Now, later in the evening that area can be a little deserted. Not sure what time you will be traveling to/from Union Station.
p.s. Also, the walk over to the Blue Line subway is safe and pedestrian friendly by day.

It is pretty safe, but you always have to keep in mind you are in a large city where anything can happen. I dont know where you are from, but regardless of an area's total safety keep on your p's and q's. Especially after nightfall.

Agree. Have been there many, many times. During the day, no problem and early evening also. If you arrive at an uncomfortable time, there are invariably cabs out front. I would say inside the station, of course, you are fine at any time. Very late night, I wouldn't advise walking around alone too much outside the station, although I've done so, and waited for buses there, and was fine.
Agree, depends on your city experience and awareness.

How early is it deserted in the evening? I am taking the train down in a week for some job interviews ( much cheaper than gas) and I will need to walk back to the Union Station around 6:30pm mid-week. Would that be a problem in general? I would have no problem taking a cab if it will be deserted.

No problem walking as it is daylight still then. Also, it is not deserted at 6:30. Just dont look and act like a target and you should be fine. As long as you have street smarts I would not worry too much.

KSML, you'll be fine, seriously.
Especially at 6:30.
