Thats a good point. There are some varieties which you can age for years, but in most cases you want to drink as close to bottling as possible.

I've got a pretty good feel for what's been sitting there and for how long. Unfortunately some of it has gone bad on me, but a lot of what is left has a high hop content or is bottle conditioned, both of which lend themselves to long-term storage, at least as long as the non-bottle-conditioned stuff has been pasteurized. The bottle-conditioned stuff can age for a really long time -- I have some barleywines dating as far back as 2003 and 2004. I just drank a 4-year-old bottle of Flying Dog Horn Dog barelywine last weekend that was exquisite. The more delicate stuff, namely stuff that is neither bottle-conditioned or pasteurized, is in my fridge. It also helps that my pantry stays at about 55 degrees in the winter, but it does get up to room temp in the summer, unfortunately.

I also have a pantry for my beer. It's the little cupboard below the coffee pot in the kitchen where my wife forces me to cloister them. On occasion I'll reach for a beer. Gollum will poke his head out and say, "Master, this is my precious, Bells Amber! Bell's Two-Hearted, Two Brother's Heavy Handed. Master, stay away from the precious! Eeeee"

Nice pantry!

I'm lucky enough to have a dedicated beer fridge in our back room - comes in handy for lagering too! Right now it's got a lot of Trois Pistoles, Old Thumper, 2 below, 1554, a mini keg of Einbecker Mai Bock, and a partial 30 pack of PBR. Right now it also has a million tiny plastic goats on the top of it.

I just stocked my pantry with every variety of New Glarus beer I could buy in Wisconsin over the Christmas holiday. I'm already down to the last six pack. How about some Chicago distribution, New Glarus?

Kenosha is not that far of a drive. Just stock up every few weeks.

It always amazes me how fast a stash of New Glarus can go. I'm also amazed at how fast the word spreads among my friends that I have one!
