I'm looking at a couple of condos around Artesian and North Ave., just one block west of Western Ave. Does anyone know if this is a nice/safe area?

That area is full of crime such as robbery and theft

Actually, that area isn't too bad, similiar to what you would find in many parts of logan square. That area is technically considered West Town, not Humboldt Park south of Bloomingdale.
It is not Lincoln Park or quite as nice as its neighbors to the east of Wicker Park and Bucktown, but as a whole the area is okay. Around Clemente are some flashing blue lights and there are a couple along division and just north of division. Steer clear of areas near the lights and you should be okay. Also, steer clear of Bickerdike developments or any buildings in general that have no loitering signs. I don't see theft or robbery as any bigger issues than you would experience in Logan Square. Just remember it is the city and be watchful and as a whole you should be okay. There are certainly worse areas, such as where I live near Pulaski and North and even I am able to walk outside at all areas, so long as I don't venture south of grand or division and keep my eyes and ears open. Just don't take anything for granted and you will be more than fine in that area. |

I think it's going to depend on the OP's comfort level. Have you lived in a (or this) city before?

That neighborhood (west of Western) is Humboldt Park. The community is West Town.

I wish we could just use one or the other. I use one of the 77 community areas but would like to know which one is more acceptable. Many of the govt websites and nonprofits use community areas. I have always tried to stay away from using neighborhoods as I find it confusing. But to each their own.

Well with the neighborhoods that are well defined and/or official it is better to use the neighborhood name most of the time. It is a pain in the butt to list the neighborhood name and community name every time ,but in certain cases it might be better. Yeah it is all confusing to many people. It is too bad when the community study was done, the neighborhood names and maps were not made official and drawn up, it would have saved many headaches. Partially because of this not happening people came up with stupidity like Wrigleyville,Boystown, which are not official and have no set boundaries. They are more like nicknames... Though apparently "Wrigleyville" is official now as it is on the official city map now. I hate that name and always still call it Lake View unless I have to use the word Wrigleyville to people that do not know any better or to save time in explaining. What are they going to call the area after the parks name gets changed? You know? City of Chicago - Neighborhood Map Last edited by Avengerfire; 05-13-2008 at 07:01 PM. |

I think most Chicagoans use neighborhoods. I've never heard anyone call Pilsen "Lower West Side" I think community is used more by sociologist and academics. Us regular folks just use the neighborhoods name. I do think that the area depends on your comfort level. I would say that most Chicagoans would find this area acceptable, I'm not very familiar with that intersection, but I'm almost positive I'd find it acceptable. I think people that come from sheltered backgrounds or have a severe aversion to anything not lilly white would probably not feel comfortable. Your die hard conservative lincoln park trixie would not want to live there. The best advice I can give to someone, and this comes from experience is to get to know the area, especially the block. Neighborhoods really do change from block to block. Survey the block at least several times, and preferably on a warm evening. This will give you a good idea. I've been to some blocks that are fine on a Wednesday afternoon, but go there on a Friday evening, forget about it, all hell breaks loose. |

To the OP -There are like 50 threads with much vaulable info on Humboldt Park already written! Please search the forum!
All I will say is: You are very close to Wicker Park at that address. E.HP is getting better, but it is far from being really safe. You are much better off closer to Western than farther from it however. |

Just so you all know, the boundaries of the Humboldt Park NEIGHBORHOOD are North Ave on the North,Chicago Ave on the South,Western Ave on the East, and Pulaski on the West.
