Maybe the most "safe" neighborhood close-ish to the Loop...

I'd say that there are neighborhoods on the Northwest side that are a great deal safer than Lincoln Park.

I know several people who've been mugged in Lincoln Park. I don't know a single person who's had any trouble in, say, Edison Park. Or even Lincoln Square.

I guess you kind of expect it to happen once in a while around here. After 7 times though, it adds up. Total damage so far, not counting the hit and run: approaching $3,000. This is the kind of crap that makes people want to retreat to the suburbs. The utter lack of respect for other peoples' property in this city is disgusting.
Make it 8 times now.

That sucks, Drover. It really does.

That's two posters reporting this today. I wonder what the stats are for car theft vandalism lately. Think there's been an overall uptick?

I'll continue to knock on wood about this, but I've never had a car vandalism in Chicago, but HAVE had my car broken into TWICE in one of the safest small towns I've ever lived in.... Just goes to show you never can tell.

Hope the damage isn't too bad, D.

Not too bad. They smashed the mirrors; not just the glass but the whole housing/assembly. Found a used replacement set on eBay for $25, and I can do the work myself (unless of course some meter prick decides to harass me for fixing my car on my own driveway). But I got lucky. If I had to replace them new, it would be nearly $500 for parts alone.

I can at least understand why people break into cars to steal something of value. But the amount of vandalism committed in this town just to be an antisocial f*#k is absolutely mind-boggling. What possible reward can you get out of doing something like this?

What a drag. I don't understand vandalism, either. Then again, I don't understand littering. I guess I'm just a boy scout like that.

I know you have a driveway at your place in IP but have you considered renting out a garage spot from someone in your neighborhood. I can't imagine they'd go for more than $75 a month up there.

It's never happened to me in Chicago. But I did have my car vandalized in Milwaukee quite senselessly many years ago.

Drover, you've either got some bad luck or some real prick neighbors.

Only one incident actually happened in this neighborhood (well, two if you count two of my cars getting vandalized in the same incident), so I don't know that getting a garage is going to do me a lot of good, unless I can bring it with me everywhere I drive.

you really do have some terrible luck then, i'd figured this was overnight vandalism. if it's happening while you are parked at Einstein's then i don't know what would help you.

Was it the Porsche? I could see a Porsche eliciting some class hatred, even if it's an old cheap Porsche. I don't know. I'm grasping for explanations, because EIGHT car vandalism episodes is just beyond weird.
