Is Chicago the best major U.S. city to live, work, and play?
Overall, do you consider Chicago the best major city to live, work, and play in the U.S.? If so, tell us why and what you like about this city. If not, tell us why and what you don't like about this city.

You will find the people on the Chicago board overwhelmingly enjoy living in Chicago, some to the extent that they wouldn't consider living anywhere else.

A mayor who operates the city like a dictator. Dug up an airport in the middle of the night because he wanted it closed. Has a rubber stamp city council, county board and one of his cronies in the governors mansion to do his bidding. Headed for a record murder rate because the only people with guns are criminals. I'm getting out of here.

LOL, a record murder rate? It's the lowest it's been in decades, 55% lower than it was in the 90's. The sheer number of murders last year was also the lowest it's been in about half a century.

I enjoy Chicago and it's a very pretty city (for two months), but of all the places I've been... Well, even when I was living in the city it wasn't really as memorable of a place as other places I would visit. It's a nice place to live, it's definitely not a great place to work, and to play? I can think of places I've enjoyed more.

379 homicides 1/1/2008-5/15/2008. The way that looks carried out to 12 mos it looks like 1010 homicides this year. I may be outside of Chicago but thanks to King Daley's cronie in the Gov's mansion my money goes to run the CTA & RTA which I cannot use. State(my tax) money helps maintain a top heavy school system that while spending more money per pupil than most achieves less. So as I said I'm out of the State of Chicago

If your money didn't go to the CTA and RTA the roads would be so congested you couldn't go anywhere at all. You'd also be breathing the millions of pounds of air pollution that would be realeased by the large number of new cars added to the daily commute. And downtown would be nothing but a hollowed-out shell with parking lots, like many other American cities. It's money well-spent, "dude".
Your homicide numbers are way off. You're making the assumption that all months are equal, and they are not. This year's numbers aren't that far off from last year's at the same point in the year, and last year we had the lowest murder rate we've had since the 60s.
