Hi, I'm a single woman in her late 30's; I just got a job at U of Chicago and am trying to figure out what neighborhoods I should target. Hyde Park would be the obvious choice, but apparently the nightlife there sucks. Anyone have any suggestions about neighborhoods that are more lively at night but still within an hour commute by public transit to U of C?
I'm hoping to avoid the hassle and expense of buying a car. I'm also into jazz, blues & R&B clubs and wonder which neighborhoods have a lot of live music... Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance... ![]() |

if you like jazz and live music, you may want to check out the River North & Streeterville areas. Lots of great bars & restaurants there.

Don't abandon the south side. Look at the new condos at 1555 South Wabash. Beautiful views of the city, and lots of new nightlife around. You also have an easy train ride down. There's a fitness center right in the building too. You can see what it's like at 1555wabashchicago.com or by visiting new west realty website

Oh, and depending on the housing you want, you can also find condos, duplexes and townhomes at Eastgate Village which is between UofC and downtown, along the lake. Visit New West Realty | Let New West Show You the Way Home for directions and info. This is another New West Realty project. I know those people well, and they'll take good care of you.

You are correct about Hyde Park -- it's 95% closed at 10pm, drives me crazy.
One thing to be aware of is anywhere north or west of the Loop will require a transfer to get to Hyde Park (except for 171 bus which runs infrequently). That should still fit within your hour constraint but not by much. Because of this many UC people looking for a little more action move to the South Loop, which is a quick metra ride to HP (12 minutes). South Loop is still limited, though, but improving quickly and much better than HP re nightlife. If you are going north side there are many options depending on taste. I'll let others comment. |

Lincoln Park is great. Its full of life at midnight. Lots of foot traffic. Single professionals everywhere. Give it go and see if you like it. Get a cheap car and hop on lake shore dr, you will be at U of C in under an hour
