I agree, but why limit yourself to the most inhospitable acoustic atmosphere in the City? Just play on the street where there's lots of people and enough room so you aren't in the way.

Default CHICAGO Subway License

Inasmuch as I have not relocated to Chicago to date, I was visiting last week. I WENT TO CTA OFFICE (Clinton & W. Lake Sts.), TO APPLY FOR THE LICENSE. (I figure why wait to "busk", until I'm officially in Chicago). The lady who issues the license, stated that I HAVE TO BE AN ILLINOIS RESIDENT, TO OBTAIN A SUBWAY PERFORMERS LICENSE. The CTA LICENSE IS A BARGAIN, AT $10.00 PER YEAR!!!

She claimed "it would not be fair, to take spots from legitimate Illinois residents". I told her "I would be performing, late at night, AND no one is there performing at the hours I would be"!!! She said "come back when you move to Illinois"!!!

I "SNUCK A BUSK", AT 3 AM, on the MONROE & CLINTON (Blue Line) PLATFORMS. No one was there, and I sang a song, just to feel "the thrill of performing on the subweay platform"...

DO I have to be an ILLINOIS RESIDENT, TO SING ON THE STEETS? WOULD CITY OF CHICAGO GRANT ME A LICENSE? Can any Chicago people, advise me on that? MY DREAM REMAINS "ON HOLD"...

Riding the CTA is an all out assault on the senses, and buskers only add to that stress. This is just one of the reasons I try to take the bus when I can.

I would much rather see a person getting money like this

At least they're not begging for change. Those are annoying.

Why? From a suburbanite's perspective, things like Subway performers make the city COOL. If you don't like it, move out here to the suburbs. It's as simple as that.

As a musician I have no problem at all with people playing music in the subway. In fact, even I have done it in the past.

People have the right to earn their keep. That includes playing non invasive and non offensive music in L stations. No different than people yammering on the cell phone on the train, which I find way more annoying, especially if they have an earpiece.
