The Galewood neighborhood is north of the Austin neighborhood, and part of the official Austin Community Area. Galewood is also in much better shape than Austin, though some say it's on its way down. Still seems decent enough to me though, but I can see how it might be in the path of decline; and it's actually coming from the east rather than the south.

Thanks.I speak about things getter worser because of what I've learned about in history and now.The 20th century produced a more sophisticated way to kill humankind-bombs,resulting in two world wars. Now we have the threat of nuclear war.Personally,I know God will step in before that happens because a 3 world war would wipe us all out.

For those who are interested in a more "long term perspective". . . there is a terrific little book that I came across. . . "The History of Englewood". . . . from it's inception up until the 80's or 90's. My family lived there from the 30's through the 60's, and this book was quite intersting to me. Can't recall the author's name, right off, but I'm sure an internet search will reveal it.

You know what, I took a closer look at a map and it turns out that Galewood is actually directly north of Oak Park, not Austin. But it's still part of the "official" Austin Community Area.

You know,I only first heard of Galewood in 2004.My husband then boyfriend lived in Oak Park at the time.We were discussing areas of Chicago.Anyhow,he mentioned that Galewood was where he wanted to buy his first home. After my small research on Galewood,I thought to myself, why would he want to live in Austin?I never had an interest to live anywhere on the westside of Chicago. So now this is like the first time since then, that I've seen someone say they live in Galewood. So now I see it is like a small community within a community. But I agree with you though,it's "officially" Austin.

people need to relax....... lol. its an opinionated question in reference to which neighborhoods in chi can be considered the roughest. its not a shot at people living there, its just an opinion. and im pretty sure a lot of crime statistics and police reports would back this up....... it doesnt mean that the people in those ares are bad people, it just means the area needs some rehabilitation.

That's it? One person said it was getting tougher so it's "going down"?

well i used to live in belmont-craign which is right by galewood and belmont-craig as well as galewood has seen an influx and rise of the of the MLD's and MK's.. the MK's have the neighborhood around Riis Park and the MLD's are around Mobile and Dickens, both of the gangs had a truce at one time because they wanted to take out the IG's but one of the MLD's shot and MK and they have been at war since
