Now, Chicago is by no means a particularly dangerous city, but New York's crime rate is considerably lower. Look it up.
I'm from New York, and lived there when the 2012 bid was being made. I supported it - though I thought building a football stadium on the West Side of Manhattan was a silly idea. Why did I support NYC's bid while I'm lukewarm towards Chicago's bid? Because, at the end of the day, I have faith in New York's leadership. I do not have faith in Chicago's leadership. Both are deserving Olympic cities, but that, to me, is the crucial difference.

You are all bringing up good points on both sides. But the real question is, can Chicago afford it, with a revenue of around $1.5 billion, I'm pretty sure we can't afford it, unless the city raises the taxes, in which case people like me would be paying out the a$$ in taxes.
So IF we did have the olympics in Chicago, I think we citizens would be more hostile to our own city. So we would probably close the olympics as a worse city than when we started them.
But on the other hand, business owners would be doing great because of the high demands on everything as the masses accumulate in Chicago.
So what I'm saying is it really could go either way if we did get the olympics, and I kinda hope we get them, but at the same time i kinda hope we don't.

Your story about your friend makes no sense whatsoever, if you're going to make up a story at least write something that can be understood.

Statistic numbers from Wiki. Except googling some numbers, what else can you provide? What is your own experience? I have been working in Detroit Downtown for almost three years. I walked from my office to restaurants hundreds of times, of course during daytime. I knew it was dangerous at night. However I never had my wallet stolen or blackmailed by anybody neither did my coworkers. Detroit has a murder rate of 47.3. So what? I survived. Now I am living in Chicago. In 2008 only two of my coworkers got robbed during daytime. What do you expect me to say? Why do you think I made up my stories? Why do you think you can judge me? I am not American, but have traveled around world and see realities. I talk with my own experience.

It's unfortunate that your friends had that experience, but your going to find that police in general (in all cities) don't wait hand and foot on people who call them about robberies. If you've taken a criminology course (which I have taken several), most cases aren't ever solved if a suspect isn't caught within 24 hours. So, are they going to spend their time with a robbery, or spend time patrolling and moving on to other cases that come up daily?
The reason why many people thought you made up stories is because you are the ideal candidate for a "fake profile". Many people come on boards trolling and trying to start fights, all while making up multiple accounts. People thought it was suspicious that you created an account (with already 10 reps) to simply tell a story without evidence.

I agree that funding is a big concern, but so far I think the city is doing a good job of not overreaching and spending too much. There will be a lot of assistance given to the city. Salt Lake City got 1.3 billion from the Federal Gov't in 2002 and Chicago should expect to get at least that much. Most will probably go towards transit. It will also be easier to get more money from Springfield for Olympics related projects, they've already pledged $150 million just for the bid. Business owners will do well, but all of that income will be taxed by the city, creating another revenue stream.

Thanks for your explaining. I just want to express my disappointment at Chicago. I used to look for information on this site but never posted. In fact in my current group, 4 of 10 people have encountered crime since I joined in 2006. Most of my coworkers plus some people from other offices working here for only several months are international. Our experience in Chicago seems scary and disappointing.

it certainly doesn't have to be bad if they turn it into educationally oriented olympic events. There are theme weeks like this all the time in schools. It looks like it would try to help kids have a little community respect and pride in Chicago.
Of course the CPS are so messed up, who knows what the end result would be. My roommate taught 5th grade for 5 years out on the west side, and it was nearly impossible to get her children to focus on ANYTHING for more than a few minutes. Some of her stories were horrifying.
