I agree with your reasoning, I would be shocked if Chicago did not get the Olympics. Rich Daley has been working on this for years, His committee has done years worth of prep for this bid (the Gay Games were the run through to show we could handle the logistics).

The Chicago haters who complain about why we don't deserve the Olympics have no idea how the process works.

The Gay Games are by no means a benchmark for being able to handle the Olympics.

A run-through, not a benchmark. Its as close as you can get. Are there any other events which come closer?

The Gay Games... LoL Superbowl maybe? Not even. And that will never be in Chicago.

Chicago has hosted many events, that taken as a whole, reflect pretty well on it's ability to host the Olympics.

Gay Games: Over 40 Sports at 6 locations across the city.
It was also dealing with a split between competing games in Montreal, which the organizing group had cancelled because they thought Montreal's plans were a money pit and wanted to make sure the event was financially solvent going forward. End result: "The Chicago Gay Games VII ended with no debt and all bills paid. The Montreal Outgames ended with 5.3M Canadian dollars of debt."

Amateur Boxing Championships: A 12 day event with over 600 boxers. This was done explicitly to help with the Olympic bid - the end result? The President of the IOC attended the event and said "The federations are happy, the boxers are happy. It was great organization". The head of the ABA (and IOC member) said "I'm very, very happy. This is, I would say, the best ever world championships."

Both smaller events than the Olympics, but they show an ability to organize and be fiscally responsible.

Chicago also runs the Taste of Chicago with between 3-5 million visitors every year, has a transit system that needs some work (but certainly beats Atlanta or Salt Lake city's transit, and they won the bids), and has the greatest amount of political and popular support among the bid cities. Tokyo is very divided about being a bid city, and Brazil is hosting the World Cup in 2014 (IOC is concerned there will be no money, or commitment, left after that for the Olympics).

There is still a lot of work that needs to be done if Chicago hopes to win the bid, but Chicago has as good a chance as any of the remaining cities.

It dosen't have to do with sports, but Chicago also hosted the World's Fair. That's pretty big.

Does anyone know of a map or pdf 'master plan' for where they would build all the olympics stadiums/structures?

There are a few places that have maps. Everything is in the planning phase at this point, and nothing is final.

This is the last official proposal released.

Here is an animation of the proposed venues.

With the shift to being a full candidate city all plans are being revised, but the general approach is likely to remain the same.
