I'm sure Mathguy did not intend to say that Chicago and China's human rights choices were the same.
I do see that Chicago has only one party, it's not going to change. We aren't like China though because we allow for change even if it doesn't happen.

The Daley machine goes back to the depression and before, when the mob actually ran the city....not likely to change anytime soon.

I'll be snippy about this all I want to, because it's ludicrous. China doesn't even have a one-party system. that would imply that somehow the Chinese have a choice... they don't.
If you don't like Daley or Stroger or whomever you can get together with a group of like-minded people and protest without fear of repercussion. This is clearly not the case in China.
The fact is most people vote for Daley over and over again, not because of fear or because they don't have a choice, but rather because at the end of the day, they don't really care that he's corrupt as long as their life is good, their children are fed and they have a roof over their head.
To compare that complacency in any way to the situation in China shows a lack of understanding and empathy for people living in slavery and fear. China: Beijing’s Migrant Construction Workers Abused (Human Rights Watch, 12-3-2008)
I find this whole thing ridiculously distasteful.

I would appreciate it if you would respond to our actual posts and not spin off in a tizzy creating strawman arguments. I find your attempts to intentionally misrepresent the posters positions re: human rights (where we are ALL in complete agreement if you'd bothered to read the previous posts) ridiculously distateful.
Back to topic... Beijing is getting a new temp mayor until *VOTING* occurs later.
Guo Jinlong appointed acting mayor of Beijing
Granted the voting is incidental as he has been picked out ahead of time by the powers that be and won't be seriously opposed. Now tell me how Stroger was *VOTED* cook county commissioner and how this is any different?
Just because "voting" occurs doesn't mean the result was ever in doubt.

I find your post distasteful. If you saw a bunch of protestors going against Daley for letting his nephew get away with reckless homicide and assualt would you ever join them? No and no one would protest because people don't know what to protest about. Daley is responsible for letting a murderer get away and still people love him. Oh, and that whole thing about the Chinese yeah their economy is growing and so is the amount of wealth for the average person. They even have food on their plates. And many even have roofs over their heads.
