The treatment plants do treat their effulent. I don't know that I'd drink the stuff, but supposedly it is possible: http://www.mwrdgc.dst.il.us/Public_Info/Our_Goal_Is_Clear.pdf (broken link)

That document also talks about the overflow of the combined stormwater and sanity sewers that sometimes happens during/following severe rains. Apparently that is the only time that untreated water finds it way into the river...
Yes I'm "sure about that". You need to re-read my post. The sewage is treated, but it's not disinfected--and that's the controversy. To treat the sewage they add coagulant to it to make the solid material group together into heavy chunks that sink to the bottom of sedimentation tanks (where the sludge is collected and transported elsewhere). So you won't see any turds floating in the river, but the bacteria is still there. The effluent from the sewage treatment plants is about 70% of the total river flow, depending on the runoff, lake level, etc. The discussion now is whether or not the MWRDGC should disinfect this water in addition to the treatment, since so many people are using the river for recreation these days.

I'm loving it more now than I did the first time 15 years ago. I was telling a friend today that this move was the best thing I could have done for myself and I'd recommend it to anyone else considering it.

As a side note, this weather over the past week or so has been fantastic...it reminds me of October in Texas....LOL....and the best thing is that it's only June!! I'm actually one of the ones that likes cool weather compared to constant heat so it's perfect for me.

Default I just did it!

I happened upon this forum while searching about kayaking in Chicago.

I initially worried about the filthy river, but decided to go anyway. I am so glad I made that decision. I never tipped (thank goodness), and it was such a great experience. I would definitely recommend it, and I also plan on going again - soon!

I believe there are three main rental companies on the Chicago River. My friends and I happened to choose "Kayak Chicago". Every single staff member was so polite and friendly. We were given some basic paddling instruction, a map of the river, and some helpful tips of how to avoid an accident with fast traffic. Never once were we uncomfortable about being beginners.

If you use this company, I recommend you take the far east route around Goose Island. It was much prettier and cleaner than the west route.

"Kayaking the Chicago River?"

I don't know why anyone would want to manually power a boat through wastewater.

The Chicago River is not entirely wastewater, and besides all water is ultimately recycled wastewater in some cosmic way.

Anyhow, I have kayaked/canoed the river many times (I highly recommend Chicago River Paddle), and know several people who've rowed in it daily for years. Not only is it cleaner than you think, but the views of wildlife, buildings, people, and the city are superb.

Most of the rest of the water is from storm drains.

Regardless, suit yourself.

People do it all the time. There's a rental place near the Division Street bridge.

Of course they do. I have navigated it several times.

I have done it before 99.9% and quite possibly 100% of people in this forum have too.

I just want people to know what they are getting into.

You DO NOT want to get any water on your bare skin or get your clothes wet.
