I am thinking of moving out of my parents' house and getting a condo or apartment in the city, but my biggest concern is that I am very passionate about music and play it quite loudly (say, from 3 to 6 out of 10 on the volume dial). Even at 2 or 3, if you have big speakers, the bass rumbles easily through the walls and floors. Any suggestions for places to live where this would be acceptable?

I fear I will just have to keep saving until I can get a house of my own so as to not disturb/clash with neighbors in a condo/apartment.

Thanks for any input -- I've never lived on my own. I searched on Google and this forum several times but didn't find anything. I figure there have to be quite many people out there living in condos and apartments who love to blast music on occasion and somehow manage it.

Would it be too obvious to suggest headphones?

Loud music and multi-unit residential living do not mix, period. Reasonable neighbors will tolerate loud stereos if it is infrequent, for a short period of time, and not during normal "quiet time" hours. Anything more than that is discourteous even during normal waking hours and a good way to sour relations with your neighbors. And if they have the ear of the condo board, that could spell trouble for you.

There's your answer. And even with the house, you might want to soundproof the room you play music in (if you're going to be in an HOA) or make sure you are a good distance away from your neighbor's houses. Or, do like Drover said and invest in headphones.

Therre are plenty of people who play loud music in multi-unit residential buildings. Those people are called jerks. The only thing worse would be a drum set.

HA!!!!!

I ditto the others and if you want to live in an apartment, then I would listen with headphones. I consider myself a very reasonable neighbor, but I had someone who lived next to me who played the bass SO loud that it literally knocked pictures off the wall....and this was everyday. Needless to say, the complex had to put a stop to that (I would even try banging on his door and the music was soooo loud he couldn't hear me!!! This was daily too). On the other hand, most neighbors will tolerate this every once in awhile; however, my friend lives in a building where if she has music playing at any level after 7pm, her neighbors call the police!!!!!!!

Unless you have about 800K for a single family home, you should probably invest in some great headphones.
