I just need some basic information on Chicago. What are rental costs for a studio or 1-bedroom apartment downtown in a reasonably priced area (When I say reasonable, I'm talking about a middle-class area, nothing ritzy or wealthy)? Can you get anything for say... $500 a month? Is the transportation good throughout the city?

Comments from people from Seattle and have moved to Chicago would be especially appreciated!! It's always nice to hear from someone who has lived in and experienced the same area you have lived in.

There is nothing really middle class about downtown or affordable about it either. It is going to be hard to find a place in many areas that you would want to live in for $500. It can be done though but you have to look hard. You will have to deal with lack of space or other factors for $500 a month.

My studio apartment costs about twice that with utilities included.

By downtown do you mean downtown or in the city... people tend to use the "downtown" moniker differently.

Either way $500 is going to be far too low.

$500 for a studio will probably put you in Edgewater or Roger's Park. Not the greatest neighborhoods but definitely not the worst.

All I have to say is Good luck with the new tax increase that was passed. Yeah, maybe your rent won't be affected. But try having extra money for the movies, dinner, or shopping. If I were you, I'd stay in Seattle and not give this county an extra dime.

You're not going to find apartment for $500 in the city. If they are apartments that low, you might end up in the ghetto, and I believe not even the ghetto have apartments that cheap.
