Chicago's gang problem (Harvey: apartments, move, health)

That map is good comedic material. Not to mention the number of times someone new pops into this forum and says "hey, go look at the Chicago Gangs map" makes me wonder if they're not pimping their own website here.

That map did manage to identify the one sketchy intersection in Buena Park, and correctly labeled it as a "Spanish Gangsta Disciple" corner. But the rest of Uptown seems incorrect to me. They gave way too much territory to the Vice Lords. Uptown is more of a GD and P-Stone area, and they seem to be the ones always going at it with each other.

That rivalry dates back to the late 50s, the era that saw the genesis of the major black street gangs in Chicago. GD were originally called East Side Disciples, later Englewood Disciples. P-Stone started out as the Blackstone Rangers, named after as street in Woodlawn, became one of the most famous street gangs in the country with Jeff Fort as its leader. The Disciples were known as Chicago's premier street fighters, but the Rangers emerged as probably a stronger gang. Both survive to this day as mega gangs with tentacles far beyond Chicago. When I was a teenager in Uptown the black population was small and centered around Leland and Broadway in the Stewart Elementary school attendance area. That started to change in the late 60s. There was lots of gang violence and gang fights involving southern whites (we called them hillbillies), native Americans, latinos and occasionally blacks. The organized gang thing was to come later.

Gang turf does not require that the gang members live everywhere they have "turf."

A couple of years ago a few people were stabbed and slashed on and around Clark street just south of Bryn Mawr I believe by some wacked out guy who was allegedly a Latin King.

Too many youths turn to gangs because of the fast money and because they dont get what they need at home: love, support, a family setting. I have seen good kids gone bad more than I can tell you. Some of my sons friends from schools are gang members but they are good people who havent had the support from home. Too many mothers have walked out, too many fathers are gang members so they see no way out.
All of my 25 yr olds friend have been shot. He is the only one of his group who doesnt have a bullet would on his body, some have died, most have survived.
It is sad what has happened to our youth but it wont ever change.

You know, it's funny. Now that I think about it, I live around the area where the map suggests there's a small pocket of LK members. The other week, I was walking to the market and experienced a lot of crude cat-calling from one of the porches. My original thought was, "How odd for this neighborhood." Maybe this explains it.
