Ah, well the Royal Navy. They also had flogging 'round the fleet and "kissing the gunner's daughter". And then the worst punishment of all---stoppage of grog.

iwynns, so what is the answer to the problem? havent some young pple done well in school and escaped that environment? why were they able to do so? yes, the cycle continues, but this isnt something new is it? if many of these pple in gangs are selling drugs, making lots of cash, why must they live in a place such as you describe? arent a good number of gang members living on some form of public assistance? though im sure some gang members come from parents that are hooked on drugs, i doubt every parent is. children in their early teens do have developed minds, and can surely see beyond the edge of the immediate neighborhood. yes there are often no job opportunities in residential areas, thats why they have a public transit system. arent pple in these areas responsible at least to some degree, for what their community has become, and the individual choices they have made in life, i.e. being unmarried and having multiple children by multiple partners, choosing to quit school, and so forth? sounds like you think its way to late for anything to change. there are very poor pple of other races, and in other parts of the world, yet gang life hasnt become the norm to the same degree, why is that?
the military needs to do complete background checks, certainly some of the gang members identified in iraq had criminal records. if juvenile records need to be looked at inorder to keep this type out of the military, there should be a way to do so. perhaps the recruiter could ask the applicant for signed permission to do a juvenile record search.

That made me remember a time years ago, riding the Clark bus through Andersonville, with my brother. We'd get checked from time to time in places.
We sat in the back and a young Hispanic male ran up to the bus and started beating on the windows where we were sitting. He looked angry and started throwing up signs at us. The bus pulled off and I was like "what was that about?".
