Seriously! I used to think the same as that other poster until I lived in a small rural town for three years. Everything you mentioned and more.

rural areas have problems too
Rural areas have the haves and havenots living side by side, often going to the same schools and riding the same buses. There are problems in rural areas but it is not as obvious as in the city as poverty and wealth are not as concentrated as in Chicago.
My mother evangelizes to women in jail, mostly for meth. These women are often from broken homes and have spouses or boyfriends that beat them.
Certainly, there are more problems in inner ghettos such as Englewood but rural areas have their issues too, just not as concentrated.

A lot of the crime and social pathology in rural areas flies under the radar because rural areas (by definition) tend to be far away from the major media markets.

The country is not a media market? And the South Side is? Social pathology? Satillite dishes are very prevalent in the country, so rural areas are not out of the loop. As far as what to look for, a crime is a crime. Cops (TV) goes to the trailer park as well as the hood, if that is what you mean by crime being attracted to media markets, or visa versa.
Fewer people burglarize dwellings in the country because they know that grandpa is packing a shotgun. The same can not be said about urban areas. If crime is a money thing, then the country wouldn't be nearly as crime ridden as the city because it takes a lot less to live in the country, where in the city you can't live as inexpensively as you can rurally.
Also, there are no drive-by's in the country, only on the south side...

By the way, again, this needs to stay Chicago relevant, or this will be closed and you can take it up on P&OC

[There certainly are drive-bys in the country. I'm a hunter and sometimes I'm frightened to go in some areas because the meth cookers are very protective of their turf.
But, to bring it back to Chicago, you folks need to get off race. There are more poor white folks in this nation than poor black folks.]
Specifically on white flight, this is all highly coincidental. Did any of y'all see the Trib today? They had a reunion of some folks who fled when the neighborhood around 98th and Jeffrey got too black (that's also where Richard Speck did his thing!). And when they went back, guess what they found? The neighborhood was pretty much the same, with folks a lot like themselves living in the homes and on the streets abandoned by them. Myself, I can remember the large billboards put up by realtors in white areas of the south side which read "Thinking of Selling Your Home?". It got pretty graphic.
Its a shame the white folks just didn't stay put.

In rural areas, like small towns, everybody knows each other. If you steal, rob, assault, deal drugs, murder, etc, you will get caught. People recognize, they talk, they know. Anonymity is far greater in urban areas, which reduces the likelihood of a criminal being caught, and increases the incentives for people to engage in criminal activity.

Exactly. That's why crime is lower away from urban areas, even though some people are poor and incomes are generally lower in rural/suburban areas as opposed to Chicago, this does not translate to an increase in crime. So it's not all about income, especially when comparing Chicago. Also, if anyone thinks the crime index is higher in some rural towns and cities than it is in the City of Chicago, prove me wrong.
I can't wait to see a post that says, "people in Chicago get caught more often..."
Also, rural/suburban should mean everything up to outer ring suburbs, including mid size cities like Rockford, right?

Good article. For those who want to lump all black people together, this ought to make them think twice. Guess what? Even black people don't like section 8's in their community. Amazing!
