Default Congress Plaza Hotel @ The Loop

I am about to book a place, and the price here is great ...
  • Is this a safe area to stay for a weekend?
  • Is there a decent amount of shops and eateries in the loop within walking distance from here?
  • Would it be that hard to get to the N Michgan tourist spots from here?
Yes, I started a thread about a month ago stating that this would be my first time to Chicago and I am on a tight budget. I just thought a new thread would get more immediate attention ... as I will be booking later today for next weekend.

From the reviews I read, it's a crappy hotel on the inside. I don't care about that. It's just a place to sleep.

I just want to know if it's in a safe area with at least a few things to do .

The hotel has been run into the ground by poor management, which is unfortunate. Its in a great location and could be a beautiful hotel.

But if all you care about is a place to sleep, then it will serve the purpose.

The correct answer is probably No. ... It's probably a 10- to 15-minute walk to the start of the Magnificent Mile, then another 15 to 20 minutes to the north end of the Mag Mile, where the Hancock Building, Water Tower etc. are located. Or you can take a Red Line subway from Harrison or Jackson (a block or three from the hotel) to Chicago Ave. in 15 minutes to get to the north end of Michigan Avenue.

I read that last question wrong.

Some workers there have been on strike there for like 5 years. You may have to deal with picketing. They are there just about everyday.

Heh, most of the picketers in front of the Congress Hotel actually work at other hotels.

You can do better easily. I had reservations for this hotel this past weekend because I wanted a room where I could see the July 3rd fire works. It was 138.00 per night. I went on Priceline and got the Wyndham for 79.00 a night right in the magnificent mile. I walked3 blocks to the lake and watched the fireworks. Congress is much more out of the way and expensive compared to what you can get right in the middle of things on Priceline.
