Need hotel advice...
Hi everyone,
I'm making a move soon and have narrowed it down to Chicago and Atlanta. I'm going to be taking a trip shortly to visit Chicago for a week or so and was wondering if anyone had some reasonable hotel recommendations?
I was initially planning to stay on the Mile, but it seems as if all of the hotels there are $300+. I do want to stay downtown within walking distance to everything as I'll be flying in and without a vehicle, but I want to try to keep the hotel costs down as much as possible. A safe location/hotel is very important though...
If anyone has any advice, I would really appreciate it. I do want to live downtown if I move to Chicago and from the sounds of things, Lincoln Park may be a good spot. Are there any decent hotels in that area that would allow me to get a feel for the neighborhood?
Thanks in advance everyone for your help,
Lance

Lincoln Park isn't downtown.
Downtown to most people consists of the loop and the mag mile area... though this will vary depending on who you ask.
Keep in mind this is the peak tourist season, so it's far more expensive to visit at this time of year. That said, I'd try Priceline or Hotwire for a 3 or 4 star hotel and you may pick up a deal.

BTW, If you can help it, fly into Midway. O'Hell is a huge headache by comparison, especially now that the train won't be running all the way to the airport for the next two weeks.
If you want to get a good feel for the Lincoln Park area, stay at the Days Inn Lincoln Park. It sits right in the middle of the action on the border between Lincoln Park and Lakeview (it's technically in Lakeview since it's on the north side of Diversey).

^^It varies greatly week to week as well, so if your travel dates are flexible that can work to your advantage.

I would highly recommend going to Priceline.com and then click on "name your own price".
The site will let you select a particular area of Chicago before placing your bid. You can select the Mag. Mile/Gold Coast/River North if you prefer (you had mentioned "the mile" in your original post).
I have had so much success securing low priced rooms at deluxe hotels on N Michigan Ave(Mag Mile) for friends and family by making a bid on Priceline.
Good luck and have fun visiting our wonderful city!
