Father Phleger
Skye,
I don't understand how you can respect a guy like that, who only cares about getting in the limelight. I believe he is sincere if his beliefs but has gone too far.
I view Jeremiah Wright in the same vein. I have no respect for him either. Obama should have dumped him long ago. Kinda scary that Obama stuck with him as long as he did.
Of course if Wright had stayed out of the limelight and played it cool instead of going on tv interviews after some of his sermons came to light, it might not have been necessary for Obama to dump him.
I don't like the double standard that is applied between whites and blacks regarding racism. Somebody like Wright says "Damned States of America" and he is treated like a hero by his black parishoners and if a white pastor says such a thing he is immediately fired. Father Phleger is white but speaks for a predominately black parish. Had he said similiar comments about blacks he would have been removed. I feel he is not fit to lead a congregation and should be removed.

Actually the standard is the same.
White pastor says something ridiculously racist/sexist/just plain cruel; his parishioners agree (after all that's why they go to his church). The media gets wind of it, and all hell breaks loose. What white pastor was fired? John Hagee? Rod Parsley?
Black pastor says something racist/sexist/just plain cruel, parishioners agree, media gets a hold of it and all hell breaks loose.

Those guys should have been fired too
I don't know what Hagee or Parsley said but if it was as out of line as you imply they should have been fired too.
There is definitely a double standard regarding race in both our culture and our media.
I don't require my employees to attend cultural events.

I'm not really in the habit of repeating such grossly intolerant views, and it really goes well beyond the scope of this conversation, but the comments each of them have made are readily accessible on the internet (though seemingly less so than those of Wright, though you won't hear me decrying the "double standard" ... actually you might.)
I hope you'll look into them.

I will look into their statements.
Wright is getting alot of attention because of Obama. If Obama attended another church most of us (even those in Chicago) would not even know who Wright is.
I am sure if McCain's pastor has said controversial remarks we would have heard about it too.

^^ John McCain called (directly called) Ron Parsley his "spiritual advisor"
McCain actively sought Hagee's endorsement
You seem like a pretty well-informed guy, so that ought to tell you something about the lack of media coverage.

I'm visiting from out of town. Can someone tell me when the parade is, as I have to take the El into the Loop and then the South Shore commuter train to visit someone on the South Side. Would rather avoid parade crowds if at all possible. Thanks.

Thanks Aragx6
Thanks.
I exactly proved your point.
I should be better informed about politics but honestly am burned out by the whole Obama/Clinton stuff and have mostly lost interest.
Obama or McCain will be our next President. Despite all the rhetoric, I see little changing, whoever wins.

One candidate wants to stay in Iraq forever. The other does not. That, in and of itself, should be enough of a distinction in polcy for voters to get off the fence and choose sides.
