First off, you spelled disappoint wrong. Secondly, those are fightin words.
I was referring to housing costs in case you didnt realize that. Also, I dont consider companies like Boeing, Motorola, etc, in Chicago defined as "Dollar General" companies. What the?!?!
Yes, based on population percentages. Look at overall numbers and NYC and Chicago have more Hispanics, Houston ranks third. Wrong once again!
|
You better come up with something better than a magazine dedicated to real estate and commercial project ranking to try and discount Houston being second only to New York in Fortune 500 headquarters. We have over double the number of Fortune 500 companies than Chicago. You just got owned!
Fortune 500 2008: Cities
You were NOT referring to housing costs when talking about companies in Houston. Don't try to backtrack now! You're the one that coined "Dollar General Store" so what the ????? indeed!
Of course Chicago has more Hispanics based on raw numbers. you have a million more people than we do! Houston beats Chicago hands down on diversity.
Anyways, this post was started by someone in LA trying to stir up crap. Unfortunately it has shown how little many in Chicago know about Houston. It's much more a powerhouse city than the backwoods village many here are making it out to be. There were about 500K people in Houston in 1950 compared to over 3 million in Chicago at the same time. Chicago has many things and accomplishments to be proud of! However, so does Houston and Chicago is a model for many up and coming cities like Phoenix.

You said Chicagos economy isnt the best, but statistics prove otherwise, did you read the link I provided? I know Houston has more Fortune 500 companies, but thats not what the jist of the conversation is about, get that through your head! And my "Dollar General Store" comment was LITERALLY about Dollar General. I was referring to HOUSTON as the Dollar General of America... its cheap and thats what attracts people. And like I said before, with cheap comes cheapness.
Im still trying to figure out why Houstonites have this bizarre obsession with Chicago, always wanting to compare themselves to us. Yes, Houston is growing. Great, we get the point. Its still not anywhere near as special as Chicago in my eyes, probably never will be either.

[mod cut]A flurry of people have tried to educate you with facts, but you are obsessed with your sad opinions of a city with much more money, growth, and a future than yours. We are all wondering what the Chicagoites' obsession with Houston is, because I can tell you from here, Chicago doesn't exist nor do we ever think about it. If Houston was special in your eyes, I would probably move out.

I'm sorry, but it was a little offensive when you called it a "redneck L.A." Don't you think? Not only is that just wrong (it's completely based off stupid stereotypes), but it's uncalled for. And saying "who would ever want to go there" (uh, if it was so awful I don't think it would be as large as it is, and growing). Just stupid comments IMO.
One person said they liked Houston more than Chicago. A person supposedly from L.A., in the Houston forum. So what. Can they not have an opinion???

You're right, that was offensive and reactionary.

There's southern food all over the south and west sides, margaritas and Mexican/Tex-Mex on practically every corner (Chicago has more Hispanics than Houston does), dozens of cajun/creole restaurants including the nationally famous Heaven on Seven, and there are two Equadorian, one Peruvian and one Chilean restaurant just within a mile of my apartment. Someone noted that Houston is frequently ranked the #4 foodie town. Whereas Chicago is frequently ranked #1.

Yeah--I think it was Saveur who recently rated Chicago the #1 food city in the country. Some phenomenal restaurants in Chicago including Alinea and Charlie Trotter's. There is also an astonishing variety of ethnic food in Chicago...one of the very elite cities for great ethnic food. As for Southern food, you can find that in many large cities outside the South. A friend of mine had her best BBQ experience in NYC of all places.

And that's probably not even 10% of the options in each restaurant category...
