I may be a wimp, but I put away my bike and my scooter in the winter and rely on the 'el', buses, and taxis. I'm not too keen on winter biking (pedaling or gas powered), and 'Chicago winter' is quite a bit different than 'Portland winter'.

No, I understand. I am from Wisconsin, he is from Iowa, so we are no strangers to midwest winters. I was really reaching with that one, I know Just trying to entertain all the options...

Thanks!

Not correct. Metra passes don't have any indication of restriction to any particular line.

I do believe monthly passes are line-specific.

I take the UP North Line from Clybourn to Ravenswood (reverse commute) to get to work and have never seen any conductors not let someone take a bike on the train. There seems to be a system to it - bikes get on at the front end of the train since they open an additional car at the front at Clybourn. People trying to take bikes onto cars that are already full get a lot of **** from the conductors, but they're told which train car to board.

Depending on how far the commute is from the Palatine stop to his office he may not even need a bike. I walk from around the intersection of Milwaukee/Armitage in about 20 minutes. There are plenty of great places to live in Bucktown that are closer to the Metra stop than that. Walking from the intersection of Damen/Armitage or Ashland/North would be about 10 minutes or less. Those areas (and anything in between) would put you in the center of the coffee shop/live music/etc. you're looking for.

Metra monthly passes carry no indication of a specific line and may be used on any Metra train or line. If the passenger's destination is beyond the indicated zone, he will be charged a fare supplement by the trainman. With a Zone E ticket, you could ride from anywhere south of Highwood on the North Line downtown and then out to Palatine, changing trains at either Clybourn Junction or Ogilvie.
