Nearly all politicians/bureaucrats anywhere are inept/corrupt...they don't hand those jobs out to just anyone...
That said, would argue Chicago and IL are far better off than peers in NYC/LA/SF....or in NY/CT/CA...
Relative to its peers, Chicago has a much lower state income tax; easy ability to pay the right people to make bldg permits happen for residential/commercial tear-down and new construction/renovation....much cleaner streets and better snow plowing than NYC...
And, at state level, Univ-IL is one of world's 3-4 best engineering schools; sadly, its sharpest alums (incl founders of Siebel, Netscape and youtube) all leave for SiliconValley, but they seem to donate generously to their university...NY/CT state univs are a joke...but CA's Berkeley is a superb state-financed engineering school...
Many financiers in NYC and SF/LA wish they had capitalist-oriented local politics and productive corruption like Chicago's and IL's....

It's a wonder that a union controlled city like Chicago is not in the same trouble as Detroit, Pittsburgh, or any big town in Ohio. Cities of industry are on the decline. Does anyone think Obama will carry any one of them?

It really does not matter much for whom Chicago votes for anymore for president. It sure did in 1960 however.
If you look back over the last 50-100 years, how many times has the winner of Chicago won the White House?
Hmmm...
Chicago puts morons like Blago,Otto Kerner,John and Todd Stroger,Emil Jones,Mel Reynolds,Carol Mosley Braun and the like in office.
The Chicago voting public sure does have a great track history in the last 50 years.

I'm addressing big mean bear's statement. The poster asked It's a wonder that a union controlled city like Chicago is not in the same trouble as Detroit, Pittsburgh, or any big town in Ohio. Cities of industry are on the decline. Does anyone think Obama will carry any one of them?
And my answer is "yes", I believe that Obama will probably win the popular vote in Detroit and Pittsburgh and some of the bigger industrial cities, as he does well garnering the urban vote as most Democrats often do.

Chicago isn't a union controlled town, not anymore. The state of Illinois? Yes. The city of Chicago? Not so much. It's shed a lot of the regressive union practices that held the city back for so long. As manufacturing continues to diminish, and industries such as finance and other business services increase, we'll get rid of the unions eventually
It is amazing how corrupt Chicago is, but at the same time, Chicago corruption is generally productive corruption. It's not too bad.

Labor unions are great in principle. But it's not a level playing field when places like China and Mexico don't have unions. I think the WTO should level the playing field by insisting on certain labor and environmental regulations. Sure, everything will cost more. But why should we lower ourselves to third world standards of slave labor and environmental degradation? Who exactly is benefiting from economic growth that deprives people of basic human rights and an environment that supports human life?
