Since this is a Chicago forum, you might do well to compare it to any city other than Detroit. It seems to me that families in Chicago move to the suburbs because it is more affordable and you get more space for your money. (I know public schools are an issue as well, but that's true in any major city.) That is not the case with Detroit. Nothing is cheaper than Detroit real estate, even in the nicer neighborhoods like Indian Village. Bloomfield Hills is on par with a city like Wilmette and is unaffordable for the majority of people. They like it that way. Is there any city that doesn't have a few affluent suburbs? Weren't certain Chicago neighborhoods affluent suburbs before they were annexed? Plenty of Detroit suburbs have bad reputations (Inkster, Taylor aka Taylortucky) and the majority of them are parking lots like the rest of suburbia. Behind the parking lots are post-WWII cookie cutter subdivisions with yards that kids don't play in and fences so that no one has to talk to one another.
And you might also think about the history behind white flight in Detroit. Like the fact that the FHA red-lined neighborhoods once a black family moved in, instantly depreciating home values and forcing white people to choose between protecting their one asset or making a stand for a complete stranger. Not saying it was justifiable for whites to abandon the city, but the racism was institutional and out of local control.
