Suburbs don't have a bad rep, but they are sterrotype as being boring with nothing but soccer moms, middle to upper class whites, quiet streets, and good school. Not all of this true, because there are suburbs that have bad schools, gang pronlems and high crime rates that you will find in the city. Harvey, Cal City, Cicero, and Maywood, these suburbs I list don't fit the stereotypical suburb and actually have crime you will find in the city. And you have suburbs that have high density and urban downtowns like what Evanston and Oak Park is right now.

Lots of personal preferences...and cities and suburbs are each heterogenous, complex creatures...
Would rather live in a newly-built house in either Eastern Lake Forest or in Chic's GoldCoast, rather than anywhere else in city/suburbs of Chic....
As a suburban kid, prefer to drive everywhere, even <<10 city blocks (mass transit is for the unwashed masses, and walking is over-rated ); not a fan of proximate economic diversity; like space/privacy of plentiful scenic land...
Prefer the city's far more interesting eye candy; proximity to Loop offices; and closeness to much better daily grub (and post-office drinks)...

I don't even understand the question... what are you asking exactly? Bad reputation as in bad place to live?
I would hazard to guess that most of us who are on this forum live in the city and like it that way -- some of us can imagine moving out to the suburbs eventually, some of us can't -- but I'm not sure that equals reputation...
