I dunno, at least in Chicago we rarely get ice storms Those southern MO ice storms you get every couple of years are a beast and often knock out power for a week plus!

I also prefer the white fluffy stuff. Its calming, beautiful, easier to drive on, and doenst kill the power for a week straight.

Steve-O, I agree with the liking to visit part. Jan is a great time to visit Phoenix. And the desert is beautiful place to see and spend a vacation in. I just personally wouldnt want to live there. The thing about the sunbelt places, they have to look all nice and new and generic. An old neighborhood in Phoenix, for the the most part, just looks old. And sorta outta place. Where in Chicago, it has character. Same thing in Florida. If it aint new, it just doesnt seem to look right to me. Even borderline depressing.

Are you my long lost brother?
I agree here once again. Older neighborhoods in PHX, Austin, El Paso, etc, do look very rundown. But, there are tons of old neighborhoods in Chicago that are just as run down, if not more. But youre correct that one expects places in the sunbelt to be new. Same goes for many areas of Chicago's western suburbs. Places like Oswego are booming, with lots of new developments. The older sections of town dont look desireable to me at all, which is kind of sad.

Ya, but if chicago was all brand spanking new, like alot of the devolpment in the sunbelt, it would lose all its character. Its like comparing a man to a woman. Man (CHIGAGO) goes gray, he looks "DISTINGUISHED", a woman (PHOENIX) goes gray, she looks "OLD". Plus, alot of older homes were built with brick. I HATE them new frame houses with siding. To me, they look cheap. And how about an older housing plan. The lots and trees are matured. No matter how nice a new home is in a new devolpment, the lots will never come close to a matured lot.

Actually, we did have an ice storm in early December last year. I remember thinking how much worse than snow it was. At least you can get traction while walking or driving in snow.(Well, somewhat on the driving) Icy roads & sidewalks are just treacherous.

I graduated last May. But the school buses have to go along a lot of gravel roads and dips (where the road dips into a creek).
Too much rain or too much ice (wouldn't need to be much) would get us out of school. We also got out a couple days for deer season.

A typical Chicagoan including myself would say anything above 50 is nice weather.
